TO ALL WHOM IT MAY COBIQERN: i
Beit known that I, H. W. BENTON, of Lebanon, Grafton county, New Hampshire, have invented a' new and useful Improvement in Ladles;" and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactJ description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of ythis specification.
t The present invention relates to. ladles, more particularly of that class of ladles used for the pouring of metals in casting and the invention consists in hanging to the top of the ladle, across which it extends, a guard ot' suitable form, that, while allowing the metal to pass or pour out, will holdbackand retain the dross, skimming it from the surface of the melted metal as the'metal is poured. In the accompanying plate of drawings myl improvement'in ladles is illustrated- Figure 1 being a top or plan view of the ladle, and v Figure 2 a transverse vertical section taken in the plane of the line :r w, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
A, in the drawings, represents a ladle, such as is-used for the purpose of pouring metals incasting. B the handle to Vthe ladle. The ladle on its upper edge C is notched at two points D, directly opposite leach other, to receive the trunnion pins E, of a guard, F, made of a crescent shape, and which guard, whenhung iu the notches D, is across the top of the ladle, and acts, when the ladle is properly tipped up for pouring, to skiin and remove the dross from the surface'of the metal as it passes out of the ladle, the metal passing vthrough the space H between the edge G o f the guard and the portion I of the top of the ladle.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a ladle of a guard or skimmer, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 26th day of February, 1867.
H. w. BENTON.
