Description
man ra'rns aren't rricnt JOHN J. NOSER, OF LUTHER, MISSOURI.
BOX- -FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,461, dated November 27, 1900.
Application filed Decemher30, 1899. serial No. 742,082. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. Nosnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Luther, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to packingboxes, and more particularly to the improved means for fastening the lid or cover, the object being to provide an exceedingly cheap and simple means for securely fastening the said lid or cover, which means can be quickly and easily operated to either open or close the case or box.
The invention consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case or crate constructed inaccordance with my invention, the lid or cover being removed. llig. 2 is a view showing the case or t crate having the lid or cover fastened thereon.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the crate and lid or cover.
The case or crate A is constructed in the usual manner and has a central partition A.
A metallic strap B extends entirely across the upper edge of one end, said strap being arranged parallel to the upper edge and a slight distance above the same, the ends B of said strap being carried down and fastened to the sides of the box, as most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A metallic bail C, essentially rectangular in shape, is pivoted to the opposite end of the case or crate adjacent to the bottom, said bail being adapted to turn freely upon the pivots O. The lid or cover D is reduced at one end, as shown at D, the upper and lower surfaces of which are inclined upwardly, whereby the reduced portion is only adapted to fit beneath the metallic strap B when the cover is held in an inclined position; but after it has been inserted and the cover is placed in its horizontal position it will be im-' possible to move the same longitudinally, as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. At the opposite end of the lid or cover are produced two longitudinal grooves D said grooves being arranged adjacent to the opposite edges of the lid or cover and extend to the end of the said lid or cover, the open end of said grooves being deepest, as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, Spring-tongues E are fastened in the grooves D at their closed ends, the free ends of the said tongues having the heads E formed with the beveled ends E The lid or cover is also provided with one or more dowel-holes D adapted to receive the dowel-pins D, projecting upwardly from the partition A.
In operation the reduced end of the lid or cover is slipped beneath the metallic strap B, and the dowel-pins will enter the holes E The bail C is then turned up, and as it strikes the beveled faces of the heads of the springtongues the free ends of said tongues will be depressed, permitting the bails to pass beyond the heads, and the moment the bait is passed beyond the said heads the spring tongues will immediately force said heads upwardly, thereby securely locking the bail across the end of the lid or cover.
When it is desired to open the ease or crate, the springtongues are depressed into the grooves and the bail C thrown down, and the lid can then be lifted slightly to disengage the dowel-pins, and after this has been accoin plished the red uced end can be Withdrawn from beneath the strap.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a box haviuga partition across its center, of a bail rigidly secured at one end, a bail pivotally secured at the other, steps on top of the partition, a cover for the box, the under face of which is adapted to engage with said stops, and one end is provided with a reduced portion to fit under the rigid bail, the top and bottom surfaces of the reduced portion being inclined upwardly toward the top of the cover, and the other end of the cover is recessed longitudinally, and spring-latches secured in said recesses in position to engage with the pivoted "bail when it is swung over the end of the cover.
JOHN J. NOSER.
