NUT LOCK.
(Application filed 00$. 14. 1899..-
(Ho Model.)
A TTO/f/VE Y Tamas UNITED Fries.
WATSON W. SPENCER, OF WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO W. H. BOWERSOX, OF SAME PLACE.
NUT-LOCK;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,923, dated November 13, 1900.
Application filed October 14, 1 8 9 9.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WATSON W. SPENCER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Clark street, WVilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved nutlock; and it consists in certain details ofv construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a nut and bolt provided with my improved locking device, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lock ing-key.
To construct a nut-locking device in accordance with my invention, I provide the nut 1 with an internal recess 2, one side of which is radial with the center of the bolt 3 and the other angular. Arranged within this recess 2 is a key 5, formed with a sharpened edge 6 to engage with the threads of the bolt and at the inner end with two spring-barbs 7, which are adapted to engage with the side walls of the recess 2 and hold the key in position.
In operation the nut 1 is screwed tightly in position and the key 5 driven into the recess 2, which will cause the sharp edge 6 of the key to plow a slight groove across the threads Serial No. 733,620- (No model.)
4, and as the pressure to release the nut is brought against the radial side of the recess 2 the nut 1 is prevented from turning by the key 5.
To release the locking device, it is only necessary to slightly tighten the nut 1, which permits the key to revolve backward into the recess, releasing the sharp edge 6 from the threads 4.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a nut-lock, the combination, with the bolt, and a nut provided with an internal recess having one of its side walls radial with the center of the nut, the other side wall in angular relation to the center of the nut, and its outer wall parallel to the center of the'nut, of a key 5 having a sharpened edge 6, said key adapted to lie normally within the recess with its one side against the radial wall of the recess and its outer face against the outer wall thereof with the sharpened edge impinging upon the threads of the bolt, and a pair of diverging arms formed integral with the inner end of said key and having barbs adapted to impinge upon the side walls of the recess, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affiXed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WATSON W. SPENCER.
