CASIN'G-HEAD FOR OIL-WELLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,913, dated November 13, 1900.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARKE HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, (Whose post-office address is Franklin,Venango county, Pennsylvania,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casing-Heads for Oil-Wells; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,snch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
.My invention relates to improvements in casing-heads for oil-wells; and it consists in an im proved form of casing-head hereinafter described and claimed.
Heretofore it has been the practice in operating oil-wells to throw away the belled-over upper section of the casing used in drilling the well and to supply in place thereof a separat-e section of tubing screw-threaded for the connection of the casing-head, which latter has been ordinarily attached to the casing by a screw-thread joint. This practice has been objectionable for many reasons. Notable among these is the fact that the belled-'over upper section of the casing, or, in other words, the drillers casing-nipple so called, must be entirely thrown away after having once been used, for the reason that the Wells vary in depth, and it rarely occurs that a casingnipple used with one well may be used for another well. In addition to this is the extra labor and expense in cutting and fitting the short section, to which is immediately connected the casing-head as commonly used. My invention is intended to overcome these object-ions, and I do this by the provision of the casing-head,whicb may be utilized in connection with the ordinary drillers casing-nipple, the latter being allowed to remain and be utilized.
My invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters used on the several Views.
Figure l represents a vertical sectional View of my improved casing-head in position as used in the mouth of the ordinary drillers Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of my improved casing-head, and Fig.

A represents the ordinary drillers casing nipple, having belled-over upper edge A0. This drillers casing-nipple is commonly used and well known, and its object and manner of forming the same need not be spccically described herein.
B represents thecasing-head, constructed according to my invention. This casing-head comprises the body portion B0, having lateral extensions B, screw-threadedas at b', for the connection of pipes and tubing. The casinghead has also a flaring upper end B2, provided with an annular seat b2 for the ring or collar C, which rests loosely upon the said seat and is provided with a central opening c forthe passage of the tubing D, which tubing passes axially through the casing-head Bin the usual manner; This tube D is fitted with a thimble or collar D', which constitutes a support for said tube, and this thimble or collar rests upon a heavy annular ring D0, which in turn rests upon the ring C, which is provided with ba seat c0 for the said ring D0, as seen in Fig. l. The ring D0 is preferably provided with a pair of links do, by means of which ropes or chains may be attached to said rings for hoisting the tube D from the well when desired or for lowering the saine into the well. The arrangement of the thimble or collar D asa support for the tube D is intended as a safeguard to prevent the tubing falling into the well should the said tubing D be broken pff above the casing-head by any accident-such, for instance, as the blowing over of the derrick commonly used in connection with an oilwell, but not shown in the drawings.
The body B0 of the casing-head B may be in my invention substantially of the saine shape as in casing-heads commonly in use now. The main feature of my invention and that which constitutes the chief improvement consists of the reduced tubular extension at the bottom end of the casing-head. This tubular extension B3 may be cast solid with the casing-head, as shown in Fig. l, or it may be a separate casting B4, as shown in Fig. 3. This tubular extension B3 is formed of such a diameter as to iit snugly within the upper end of the drillers casing-nipple A, the an- IOO nular enlargement or shoulder B5 on the casing-head resting upon the belled-over edge AO of the casing-nipple, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus supporting the casing-head. Although the extension B3 should fit snugly within the nipple A,it is preferable to use a small amount Y provided with screw-threads b5, and the up-j per end of the tubular extension B4 is provided With male screw-threads b4, which engage the female screw-threads b5 in the casing,
head above referred to.
Whether the casing-head and the tubular extension to fit Within the casing-nipple `are cast integral or whether they are cast separately and united by a screw-thread joint, as above described, the construction and the 'ap'- pearance, as well as the use of the casing head, remain substantially the s'ame.
In using my improved form of casing-head the drillers casing-nipple is allowed 'to re- -main undisturbed,and it merely becomes necessary in fitting the Well for pumping to seat the extension on the casing-head into the nipple and afterward connect the tubing in the ordinary Well-known manner.
The main advantage of my improved casing-head arising from the convenience is the saving of time and trouble, and the great saving of expense Will be too well appreciated and understood by any one familiar with the 0peration of oil-Wells to need further emphasis herein.
n Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-" In an oil-Well apparatus, the combination with the drillers vcasing nipple having its belled-over upper end; of a casing-head having a tubular extension thereon fitting within the belled-over end of 'the 'drillerscasing-nipple and having an exterior concave curved shoulder resting upon said belled-over end of the vdfrillers casing-nipple, substantially as described.
