PATENT COVER FOR CIGAR OR OTHER BOXES.
SPECIFICATIONOrmng part of Letters Patent N 0. 660,858, dated October .30, 1900 Applicant had July 9, 1900.
To a/Z whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. KREH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Guards or Covers for Cigar or other Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a novel construction of a guard or cover for a cigar or other box by means of which the goods are 4not exposed to dust, dac., and may be displayed in an attractive and effective manner, provision being made by the employment of anovel construction of hinges for secu ring said guard in proper position and also serving to support the lid of the box in an upright position when desired, said guard being interchangeable or applicable to another box when removed from the empty box.
It further consists of novel details of const-ruction,-all as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure l represents a perspective view ofy a guard or cover for cigar or other boxes embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a guard or cover and its adjuncts similar to that seen in Fig. l, butA showing also applied thereto an auxiliaryloc`king device, which prevents tampering with said guard. Fig'. 3 represents a perspective view of one of the removable or detachable hinge members employed. Fig. 4L represents a side elevation of a corner of Figs. l and 2, showing the relative position of the guard to the box and its cover. Fig. 5 represents a section on line on Fig. 1. perspective view of vone corner of the guard or cover. Y
Similar letters of reference indicate corre. sponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designatesa Fig. 6 represents a Serial No. 22,941. (No model.)
Each end portion of the reinforce C which is in proximity to the rear of the box-cover D when the parts are assembled is provided with an eye or opening E, having a channel E adjacent thereto, into which eyeis inserted the extremity or journal portion F of the hinge members G, the latter being provided with the offset portion H, which has the continuation or limb J, which is bent at the point K and then turned to form the member or limb L, whereby a loop M is produced, which receives and grasps or embraces the edge portion of the cover D, said member L being deiiected downwardly to form the stop or abutment N, which is adapted to contact with the rear wall of the box. The offset portion H causes the guard B to be set forward of the hinge portion of lid, so that the latter does not bind with said guard, and vice versa, as either the lid or guard is swung open orclosed.
The manner of assembling'the parts is as follows: The transparent guard or cover B is rst placed in position, the rear portion thereof being in proximity to the cover D. The journal portion F of one of the hinge members G,Which, it will be understood, are made rights and lefts, is inserted in the adjacent eye or bearing E, whereupon the cover will be engaged between the walls .l and L of the loop M, whereby said cover will always be held in the proper position, and the stops N lprevent the cover from falling, while the offsets H also assist in holding the hinge members in the desired position relative to said cover. The guardv B can now beraised and lowered to give access to the contents of the box, and it will be readily apparent that when the box is empty, the guard, the hinge members, and their-adjuncts can be readily detached therefrom and applied to a new or fresh box, accordingto requirements.
When the guard is in closed position on ythe lid, the box may be placed in a window, case, dac., its contents being readily seen therethrough, although the lid proper remains, said guard being tightly held on the top of the box, to prevent dust entering the latter under said guard,by means of the clamp P, formed of the partsQ, R, and S; but this constitutes no part of the present invention.

IOO
Itwill be seen from the foregoing that by my invention I have provided a novel construc tion of a transparent guard or cover, which can be readily applied to and disconnected from existing boxes, the same enabling the goods or merchandise to be displayed and inspected Without opening the guard, While at the same time access to the box can be readily had, and dust, dirt, dre., are prevented from entering the same.
It Will of course be apparent that slight changes may be made by those skilled in the art Which Will come Within the scope of my invention, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction Ihave herein shown and described.
'Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire ro secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A removable hinge for an interchangeable transparent guard for boxes, consisting of a loop, and a journal projecting from one of the limbs thereof, said journal being adapted to enter said guard and said loop to receive the edge portion of the cover of the box, and engage the same, thus connecting said guard with said lid and permitting both guard and lid to be opened or closed.
2. A removable transparent guard for a box, and a hinge common to said guard and the lid of the box, said hinge being formed of a loop adapted to receive and engage with the end portion of said lid, a journal continuous of one of the limbs of said loop being adapted to enter said guard and an offset between said journal and limb.
3. A transparent guard or cover for a box, the edges thereof being provided with a reinforce, the rear portion of the latter being formed With an eye or bearing, and a hinge member having a journal portion engaging said eye or bearing and provided with an oiiset, the latter being continued to form a loop for the reception of the edge portion of the box-lid, said loop having a downwardly-defiected member adapted to form a stop or abutment and to hold the lid in the desire position.
4. A transparent guard or cover for a box, and a hinge member therefor, the latter consisting of the loop M, the odset portion H, the journal portion F, and a depending portion N, adapted to Contact with the rear of said box.
5. A transparent detachable guard for a box provided with a hinge member common to said guard and box to which it is applied, said hinge member having means thereon for supporting the lid of the box in open condition.
6. A hinge member for a removable guard for a box, consisting of a loop adapted to receive and engage with the edge portions of the lid of the box, a journal continuous'of one of the limbs of said loop adapted to engage said guard and a stop depending from said loop adapted to abut against the box when the lid is raised.
7. A hinge member consisting of the journal portion F, its offset H, and the loop M, said loop terminating in the stop N.
