To wll whom it may concern- Be it known that I, J our; ISAAC THoRNY- CROFT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britaim and Ireland, residing at Chiswick, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented Improvements in Water-Tube Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to water-tube boilers of the so-called' Daring type, (see Thornycrofts patent, No. 452,401,) wherein, inter alia, an upper steam and water vessel is connected to three lower water vessels by groups of bent water-tubes so disposed that some of them form dues in which other tubes are located and through which the products of combustion escaping from the fire-boxes formed by and between the groups of tubes pass on their way to the chimney or uptake. In such boilers it sometimes happens, especially when they are of smallheight, that the hot gases are not uniformly distributed throughout the whole length of the fines, but tendto take a short path to the chimney, with the result that the whole of the heating-surface of the tubes is not utilized to the greatest advantage. i
Nowthis in vention has for its object to prevent or mitigate this drawback, for which purpose some of the tubes within each inner or outerfiue or in each of the inner and outer fines are arranged to form,.except at their ends, one or more close walls of tubes that serve to divide the due lengthwise into two or more compartments that communicate with each other at their upper and lower ends through passages formed by and between the upper and lower end portions of the tubes after the manner of the inlet and outlet sages ordinarily formed between the upper and lower .ends of the tubes constituting the innerand outer walls of the flue, the arrangement being such that hot gases on entering the lower end of the flue through the lower passages in that wall thereof which is next the firebox. will divide, a portion of them passing up the compartment of the due next the fire box and the remaining portion passing through the lower passages in the intervinsane hichisn xt h arrangod. in rows.

What I claim is 1. In a water-tube boiler, an upper steam and water vessel, a lower water vessel, watertubes con ncct in; t he two vessels and arranged to form a llnowith ipcnings tor inlet and outlot of hot gases, and other water tubcs connecting, said vcsscls and arranged within said line so as to form, except at their ends, one or more close walls that divide said flue longitudinally into two or more compartments that communicate with each other at top and bottom,substantiallyasdcscribcd for the purpose specilied.

In a water-tube boiler, the combination of an upper steam and water vessel, three lower water vessels, two inner and two outer groups of water-tubes connecting the upper vessel to the lower vessels and arranged to form a central exit-line two lire-boxes and two inner and two outer flues, the inner and outer titles at the inner and outer sides of each lire-box being in comm nnicatiou with the lire-box at their lower ends and in comm unication with each other and with the central line atthcir uppcreuds, and an intermediate close wall of tubes arranged within each inner fine, so as to divide the same into two ad j acent compartin'ents that are in comuninication with.
