MANIFOLD S SYDNEY, NEW-SOUTH WALES.
ALES-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'658,307,-da.ted September 18, 1906.
Application filed May 10, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MILTON Win- DEY, printer and bookbinder, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at No.
British Colony of New South Wales, have invented new and useful Improvements in Counter Sales-Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to counter salesbooks or those books which are commonly used in retail shops and in which is noted the amount of -the customers purchase on a slip for the customer and also upon a duplicate or triplicate or the like forthe use of the vender; and it consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the. accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood, reference will now be madeto the drawings herewith, in which- I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the book and binding or outer cover complete. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the outer cover and fastening-bail. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the book without the binding or outer cover, but ready to be inserted therein, showing the first leaf and its duplicate or facsimile torn from the upper sewing or binding-staples and turned up. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the stiff back of the book and a carbon-sheet attached thereto. Fig. 5 is an enlarged central section of the book as shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a similar enlarged section through the fastening tongue or clip of the bail or frame, but it difiers from Fig. 5 in that the carbon-sheet is not inserted under a leaf and above a duplicate, as it is in Fig. 5.
A indicates the slips or leaves of single is marked A and the second A Fig. 3, while cates A are marked A.
B indicates stitches or fastening-staples, which pass through the leaves A and their duplicates and through the holes B, Fig. 4, of the stiff back B, fastening saidleaves, &c., to said stiff back. In this stilf back is a cut or slit, forming a tongue B Serial No. 16,199. on, model- C is a carbon-sheet attached by adhesive material or staples or otherwise to the free edge of the stiff back B.
D is the outer cover, formed of ordinary binding. Close to one of the outer edges is affixed a bail or frame consisting of base E, from which are stamped tonguesor clips E, Figs. 5 and 6, passing through the cover D and being bent over, firmly affixing said frame to said cover. To the bent-up ends E of said base is hinged the bail E which in the open position-that is, standing at right angles to the inner face of the outer cover-will allow the book, as shown in Fig. 3, to be inserted in place, the tongue B taking underneath the base E, and then when said bail E is revolved outwardly, as shown in Figs. 1, 5, and 6, will prevent said book falling or being drawn outwardly or away from the cover.
It is to be clearly understood that instead of only a duplicate sheet A there might be as well a triplicate or any number of duplicates between the slips or leaves A and A and between A and the following leaf, and to correspond with these and to make them of utility instead of one carbon-sheet C there would be required as many carbon-sheets as there were duplicates or facsimiles, each carbonsheet being attached to the stifi back B and used in conjunction with its corresponding blank or impression sheet-that is to say, the uppermost carbon-sheet would be used for the lowermost facsimile or duplicate, and so on.
The book of slips or leaves and duplicates with the stiff back being inserted in the outer cover D and being. held' by base E and ball E it is ready for use, as shown in Fig.1. The carbon-sheet C is inserted under the slip A and above the first duplicate A as shown in Fig. 5, when the sale or transaction noted upon the first sheet A will be recorded upon the duplicate A". The sheet A and the duplicate A may then be torn away, (they may, if preferred, have a line of perforations to facilitate this tearing away,) or, if desired, either the original or the carbon duplicate may be removed and the other one retained in place, according to the kind of records required. Having so used the slip A and its duplicate, the next transaction may be recorded in exactly similar manner by inserting the carbonsheet 0 under the original A and above the duplicate thereof, and so on.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that whatI claim is l V 1. A counter sales book or tablet comprising a series of manifoldin g or copying sheets, with a carbon-sheet affiXed thereto, a back having a depressed tongue, an outer cover, and a frame having a bent-up base portion adapted to receive thereunder said depressed tongue, the end portions of said base portion adapted to pass through and secured to said outer cover, and a hinged or pivoted bail connected to said base portion and adapted to engage the edge portion of the tablet, substantially as specified.
2. A counter sales book or tablet, comprising a series of manifolding or copying sheets, with a carbon-sheet affixed thereto, a back having a depressedtongue, an outer cover, and a frame having a base portion and a bail pivoted or hinged to upturned end terminals of said frame, said base portion having an upbent portion beneath which is received said depressed tongue, and adapted to be passed through and secured to said back, said back also adapted to be connected to sheets, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
EDWARD MILTON WILDEY.
