UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. EUGENE E. BATEMAN, OF MARQUEZ, TEXAS.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,001, dated September 18, 1900.
7 A li ti fil d June 7, 1900. Serial No. 19,391. (No model.)
To all' whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE E. BATEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marquez, in the county of Leon and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new'and useful improvements in fences, and especially toa wire fence made, preferably, of plain strands of wire horizontally disposed and drawn toward one another by means of short pieces of wire which are twisted about the horizontal wires, the ends of the fastening-pieces projecting into the spaces between the wires forming barbs, said barbed ends extending, preferably, into the widest portions of the spaces between the wires, thus forming with a minimum amount of wire a fence which is substantial in character and ofiering a re sistance to a passage through the spaces .between the wires, the barbed ends of theconnecting-wires being disposed in the plane of the fence and not projecting laterally.
To these ends and to such others as theinvention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of' one section of my improved fence; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of one of the connecting-Wires, the ends of which form barbs and project toward each other and within the spaces between the longitudinal wires of the fence.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate the'horizontally-disposed wires of myimproved fence, which are drawn toward each other at intervals by means of wires B. These short wires B are twisted, one about each Wire A, after the latter are drawn a sufficient distance to ward each other, and the ends of each wire B, which are vertically disposed, project into the widest portions of the spaces between the wires, thus offering a resistance to the passage of an objectthrough the large portion of said spaces. These wires B are disposed. in the plane of the fence, as Well as the barbed ends, and do not project laterally from the 7 sides of the same.
Suitable selvage-wiresD and D are strung from post to post as the upper and lower margins of the fence, and tot-he upper-wire D the uppermost of the wires A is adapted .to be fastened by means of wires-B, which may have barbs projecting, if desired, above saidwire D, and the lowermostof the wires A is fastened to the wireD in a similar manner,
as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing it willlbe readily seen.
that by my improved fence I. utilize a less uantit Y of wire than is necessar' i'n'th'e manufacture of a fence in which'the longitu.-.
' dinal wires are brought together, forming diamond-shaped spaces with truncated ends, and I by use of the connecting-wires having'barbed ends which project into the spaces the mesh I V to my improved fence is practically the same as in a fence constructed with diamondshaped spaces between the wires.
Having thus described my'invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let.- ters Patent, is
A barbed-wire fence comprising in combination with the top and bottom wires,'the
intermediate longitudinal wires secured in pairs to a post, the distances between said pairs increasing from the bottom tothe top wire, said Wires at the post ,andprojecting beyond the edge thereof a short distance being parallel to one another, short alternatelyarranged conuecting-wirestwisted once about a wire of each pair and stretching the intermediate wires in opposite directions in a vertical plane, the ends of said short wires be-. ing vertically disposed in alinementwith one another, the spaces between the barbed points increasing from the bottom to the top of the fence, the spaces, between the adjacent wires of the various pairs, at their points of connection with the short barb wires, being equal, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
