TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it 4known that I, .IA/MES C. DUVOLL, oi' Sardis, in the county of Pancia, and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and improved Ealing-Press; and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have setvforth the nature and principles of my said improvements by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
This invention relates to a new and improved heling-press ot that class designed more especially for farmers and planters use', for pressing and haling cotton, hay, hops, Ste., libc., and to be operated by horse or mule power. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure lis a transverse vertical section of my invention taken in the line s: ru, g. 2.
Figure 2, a side sectional view of the saine taken in the line yy, tig. 1.
Figure 3, a horizontal section of the same taken in the line yy, iig. 1.
vFigure 4, a section of a portion of the same taken in the, line z as', g. 1.
S'imilar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents an upright framing, in which a press-box, B, is secured, having doors aa at its lower end where the material receives its nal pressure. In the lower part of the framing A, underneath the press-box B, there is a wheel or drum, C, placed on a shaft, D, and having a rope, Fi, passing around it, one end of said rope being attached to the periphery of the drum and the other end attached to a capstan., F, provided with a sweep, G, to which the horse or mule is attached, (see iig. 2.) H represents the follower or "platen, which works in the press-box B, and has a rope, I, passing over its top and extending down at each sido, the ends ol the `rope being attached to the shaft D, as shown in fig. l. To the top of the platen there is also attached a rope,
J', which passes over a pulley, Z1, on the top of the framing, and extends down underneath au'pulley, c, and is attached to the shaft D, the rope J winding upon the capstan in a reverse direction to the ends of the rope I, one winding upon the capstan as theother nnwinds from it, and vice versa. K is a rope, attached to the wheel or drum C, and wound thereon in u. direction reverso to the rope E. The opposite end of the rope K is attached to the capstan F, and is wound upon it in a direction reverse to the rope E.
From the above description it will be seen that when the capstan F is turned in the direction indicated by arrow 1, the rope I will be wound upon the shaft D, and the follower or platen H brought down upon the substance in the press-box, the rope J being unwound from the shaft D as E is wound upon it, so as to admit of the follower or platen descending', and. the rope K unwinding from the capstan and vwinding upon the wheel or drum C, while the rope E is nnwinding from' said wheel or drum and winding uponvthe capstan. By this means the substance in the press-box is properly compressed, and when this is effected the doors La are opened,`the compressed substance nooped or hound and removed from the press-box, and the capstan F turned in a contrary direction, which causes the follower or platen I-I to be raised so that the press-box may be again filled and the pressing operation completed. 1
4 This press may be erected and operated Within quite a limited space, and it is so extremely simple in conn struction that it may-be operated bypersons of ordinary ability, and be kept in proper working order at a very small cost. i l I i Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Operating the follower or platen H through the medium of the ropes EIK, applied in connection with the wheel and -shaft C Drand the capstan F, all arranged to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
.LAMES C. DUVOLL.
