TURBINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,051, dated August 14, 1900.
Application filed October 5, 1899. Serial No. 732,626. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWARDS J. SCOVEL and CHARLES F. ROSS, citizens of the United States, residing at Scovel, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Torbin es; and we do declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in turbine-engines,and more particularly to that class in which a vertical bulkhead or dam is built in the stream and provided with an orifice which is encompassed by the flaring mouth of a horizontal tubular casing which contains the power-shaft; and the object is to simplify the construction andincrease the power and efliciency of the engine.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will be hereinafter more fullydescribed, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved turbine as it appears in operation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectidn. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
A denotes the bulkhead, provided with an orifice B, which is encompassed by the funnel-shaped hood 1, provided with an annular flange 2, secured to said bulkhead by the bolts 3 3.
i denotes the tubular casing, which forms a continuation of the hood, and its rear end is provided with a closed portion 5, and 6 6 denote longitudinal openings formed in the rear end of the casing to permit the escape of the water after it has acted on the wheel.
'7 denotes a sleeve which encompasses the rear end of the casing, and it is capable of being adjusted longitudinally bymeans of the threadedrod 8 and hand-wheel 9 to open or close the openings 6 6 to increase or diminish the flow of Water.
10 10 denote cross-braces fixed in the casing, which form the bearings for the powershaft 12, which is provided with a series of propeller-Wheels 13 13. The forward end of this power-shaf t carries a bevel-gear 14, which meshes with a similar gear-wheel15, fixed on the lower end of the vertical shaft 16, which has a bearing in the cross-brace10 and extends through a packing-box 17 in' the hood. To the upper end of said vertical shaft is fixed a band or gear wheel, (notshown,) from which .the power may be transmitted to the point of consumption. 7
The power of the turbine may be increased at will by lengthening the casing and power= shaft andincreasing the number of propellerwheels, thus making it possible to augment the power without increasing the volume of water.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention. 1
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a turbine, the combination with the bulkhead A provided with the central orifice B, of the funnel-shaped hood provided with an annular flange, the integral tubular casing t forming a continuation of said funnel-shaped hood and provided with the closed end 5; the longitudinal openings 6 6 formed in the rear end of said casing; the sleeve 7 encompassing the rear end of said casing; the threaded rod 8 provided with the hand-wheel 9, and
engaging said closed end 5; the cross-braces- 10 and 10 the vertical shaft 16 provided with the bevel-gear l5; and the power-shaft 12 provided with the propeller-wheels 13 13 and the bevel-gear 14, the latter meshing with the bevel-gear 15; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
