SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,942, dated August 14, 1908.
Application filed March 13, 1399- Serial No. 708,881- (No model.)
T0 to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD F. WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Oook'and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-B urners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construe-- tion in a hydrocarbon-burner and method of introducing either compressed air or steam into the same, the object being to provide a device of this character in which the air or steam outlet can be regulated as desired and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed. I I
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure lis a central longitudinal section of a burner constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the pipe connections to same. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
My burner consists of a cylindrical section A, divided at its middle portion into two chambers B and O by means of a partition D. On one side of said cylindrical section A, I provide openings E and F to receive the oil and steam or air pipe G and H, respec: tively. The lower end of said section A is internally screw-threaded to receive the tapered mouthpiece or nozzle I, while the upper end is similarly screw-threaded to receive the cap J. Said cap J j is provided with a central opening K, through which a hollow valve-stem L is adapted to pass, said valvestem L being enlarged at its upper end portion and likewise enlarged at its middle portion M, said middle portion being screwthreaded and fitting the screw-threaded openingN in said partition D, said openingN being sufficiently large to admit the passage of the upper enlarged portion of the valve-stem L therethrough. The lower end of said valvestem L is also enlarged and tapered, so that its end is reduced to almost the diameter of the opening therethrough. Said enlarged lower end of said stem L is of greater diameter than the outlet-opening of said mouthpiece or nozzle I and is adapted to control said opening.
At its uppermost end said stem L is squared to receive the hand-wheel O, which is held thereon by means of a washer and screw P, the latter entering the interiorly-screw-threaded upper end of said central opening in said stem, thereby also closing said opening. A tight joint around said stem L Where it leaves said cap J is formed by the stuffingbox Q. A transverse opening R in said stem L above said screw-threaded middle portion M connects the chamberB with the central opening in said stem, so that oil entering said chamber B through the pipe G can flow through said stern and pass out at the lower end thereof.
The pipe II is connected with a cross-pipe S by means of the T-coupling 'I, and said pipe S is connected at one end with a source of supply of compressed air and at its other end with a source of supply of steam, valves U and Vbeing interposed in said pipe to enable the pipe H to be connected at will with either the air or steam supply. A Valve W is also interposed in said oil-pipe G.
The steam or air admitted through the pipe H enters the chamber 0 and passes out through the annular space between the Wall of the nozzle I and the lower end of the valvestem L, the annular outlet thus formed'being adjustable in size. By means of the taper of said nozzle and of the lower end of said valvestem L the steam or air jet is so directed that it will impinge against the oil-jet flowing from said valve-stem, thereby atomizing said oil.
It is well known that when air is used instead of steam for atomizing the oil a larger volume is required, sothat when changing from steam to air or from air to steam the annular opening between said enlarged end of said valve-stem L and said nozzle I must be adjusted accordingly. This can be more readily accomplished by my-devi'ce than by s l v cylindrical casing divided between its ends into two compartments adapted to be connected respectively with an oil-supply and a fluidpressure supply, said fluid-pressure chamber terminating atone end in a mouth contracted between its ends, of a valve-stem passing centrally through both said compartments and provided at one end with an enlarged conical head serving as a valve to control the supply of the fluid under pressure and seating against said contracted portion of said mouth, a central opening in said valve-stem extending centrally through said head, and lateral openings in said valve-stem adapted to connect said central opening there- 15 in with said oil-receivin g compartment of said casing.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNARD F. WEBER.
