DENNIS GOODYEAR, OF ITHACA, NEW YORK. Lett s Patent No. 65,560, dated June 11, 1867.
LAST-LOOK;
TO 'ALL WHOM IT MAY ooncnnm Be it known that I, DENNIS GOODYEAR, of Ithaca, Tompkins county, New York, have invented a Look for Holding the Block of Boot and Shoe Lasts to the same; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exa ct description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
Figure 1 is a side view of a last with my lock in it.
Figure 2 is a view of the shank of the last, showing my lock in it; and
Figures 3 are the separate parts of my 1001: when out of the last.
My object is to make an adjustihle fastening or look for the purpose of convenient separation, and holding, together at pleasure the block of the last and the last itself. This I accomplish by a pin or plug placed in a. metallic sheath. The plug is made cam-shape. The sheath has a tooth-like projection. When the cam portion of the plug bears on the sheath, the dog or tooth portion is projected and locks the block to the last. And to aid this the hole or excavation in the last is so made as to aid in the end described.
This is apparentin the drawings, where A is the last and B the block, and O my lock. In fig. 2, B is the block, C is my lock, made of the parts I), the handle E, the fastening of the handle to the plug, and F the sheath. In fig. 3 C is my lock, and the parts are-more clearly seen, which are D, the handle, and E and F as described, and Gr the plug, and H the dog or teeth that by the described cam action is thrust into and holds in a proper excavation in the last. And the friction on the sides aids in this.
The use of this device is that the lock is putthrough the block and into the last, and the projection I on the sheath put into its slot in the block, so that it cannot revolve. Then the plug G is, by its handle, turned. so for around that the tooth H enters its cavity in the last, and by the surface J makes friction as described. The other uses of the device are apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
Claim.
1. I claim the described device, composed of the parts G, the plug or pin F, the sheath and its dog or tooth, and handle D, or other convenient equivalent for turning and thus locking the same in the last as described. i
2. I claim the device of a. pin or plug thrust through thelast-blook into the last, and held there by friction, a dog or tooth, or other convenient means, when the locking is done by the cam-like action of the pin or plug,
as described.
