SPECIFICATION fprming part of Letters Patent No. 655,045, dated July 31, 1900. Application filed November 21, I899. Serial No. 737,966. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SEBASTIAN BENDER, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Allmendingen,nearUlm-on-the-Danube,Ger-
many, have invented new and useful Im provements in Apparatus for Recovering Oils from Condensation-Water by Filtration, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved apparatus for the recovery of cylinder-lubricating and other oils from the condensation-Water of steam-engines, the purpose of the invention being to produce a device that is automatic and only in action when required.
With these ends in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 shows a vertical longitudinal section of my improved apparatus.

The water mixed with the oil enters the box-like receptacle or trough I) through the admission-tube a. Said receptacle h is fitted with inclined twigs or bristles c, which serve as a filter for the water by preventing the passage of the oil contained in the water which collects at the surface thereof. A rotating screw-like brush d or the like, which is slightly immersed in the water, absorbs the oil from the surface of the water and carrying it with it deposits the oil particles during its rotation at an inclined channel fiwhich is fitted with bristles e, from which channel fit can easily be collected in a vessel or receptacle placed under the mouth of same. The water thus freed from the oil passes under the partition-wall g, fitted in the vessel b, and issues through the exit-tube h.
The partition-wall 9 serves for the purpose of-preventing the exit of the oil collected at the surface through the tube h of the water.
The exit-tube h is fitted with a branch 7c, fitted with a cock 2', from which issues a portion of the water running through the tube It onto a rotating water-Wheel m, journaled in suitable bearings in a bracket Z, fitted to the Fig. 2 is a plan view,
receptacle 5. Said Water-wheel m is in connection with suitable power-transmission means-such, for instance, as pulleys n o and an endless belt or rope p-for the purpose of imparting motion to the screw-like brush 01, previously referred to.
The receptacle q, provided beneath the mouth of the exit-tube h and beneath the water-wheel m, serves for collecting the water, from whence it can be removed by way of the branch 7.
Instead of only employing a portion of the water running through the tube 72. for thepurpose of driving the water-wheel m the whole of same can be allowed to issue onto the waterwheel by a single tube.
The apparatus as hereinbefore described will only then automatically start its action when condensation Water passes through same, the screw-like brush d requiring the passage of the water through the apparatus for its actuation.
Instead of the water-wheel m a conveyerscrew or a turbine may be employed.
Having now particularly described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In an apparatus for the recovery of oil from condensation-water by filtration,a brush rotatably supported so as to be immersed in the oil collected at the surface of the water, in combination with means for receiving the oil from the rotary brush and means for actuating the latter by the filtered water, sub stantially as described and shown.
2. In an apparatus for the recovery of oil from condensation-water by filtration,in combination with the rotary brush immersed in the oil collected at the surface of the water a brush-like wiper fitted to a channel for receiving the oil from said rotary brush, and means for actuating the latter by the filtered water, substantially as described andfshown.
3. In an apparatus for the recovery of oil from condensation-Water by filtration in com bination with the rotary brush and with the brush-like Wiper and guide-channel for leading away the oil recovered, a water-wheel or its equivalent, driven by the filtered Water issuing on same, for actuating the rotary brush, substantially as described and shown.
4. In an apparatus for the recovery of oil from condensation-water in combination, a vessel receiving the condensation-water, filtering means in said vessel causing the oil to 5 collect at the surface of the water, a rotary brush supported so as to be immersedinthe' .oil at the surface of the Water,-a'channe1 with brush-like Wiper for receiving the oil from the rotary brush, a Water-wheel or its equivae 1o lent driven by the filtered Water issuing from the vessel serving for, actuating the rotary brush, substantially as described and shown.
