NITED STATES PATENT O FFICE.
DAVID W. HANNA, OF NEW CASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,730, dated July 31, 1900. Application filed \Tanuary16,1900. Serial No. 1,526. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, DAVID W. HANNA, som Zen of the United States, residing in New Oas- United States patent to J. A. Vogan, No.
to 626,353, of which I am the sole owner.
The object of myinvention is to provide the free edge of the flap which projects under the free edge of the palm at the thumb-opening with a cover or pocket to hold it in .place when 1'5 the thumb is being withdrawn. This object I accomplish by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1.is a perspective of my improved glove, the flap extension of the thumb and '20 its cover being shown in dotted lines under the palm. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the glove at the thumb-joint, and Fig. 8 shows the thumb and body of the glove disconnected.
A represents a glove, which may be of any desired style and material and has a thumb opening A. B is its thumb, stitched to or otherwise forming a part of the body of the glove from the point at to the point I); but within the joint the thumb and glove-body are entirely disconnected, so as to allow the thumb to be moved in all directions without placing any seam or stitching under strain. To close the open joint thus formed, I provide the base of the thumb B with a flap or exten- 5 sion B, whichextends under the free edge A of the thumb-opening A, so that the joint while free is closed. This extension or flap B is wholly disconnected from the palm or body of the glove and slides thereunder and 0 adapts itself evenlyther'eto by the act of in= sorting the hand. The edge A of opening A extends close up to the lower portion of the thumb, so that its flap is only slightly exposed and will not accidentally pull out of the open- 5 ing in manipulating the wearers thumb.
B represents the pocket into which the ex tension or flap B projects, and said pocket is, in unlined gloves, formed by securinga piece of fabric or leather to the inner face of the glove-palm by stitching or otherwise. In 5'0 lined gloves the lining itself forms the pocket B into which the extension 13' projects.- I do not confine myself to any particular form of pocket for the flap, as it may be formed in various ways without departing from my invention. In withdrawing the hand from the glove it will be seen that all danger of the flap B being drawn out of place by reason of its adhering to the thumb will be obviated.
The improvement may be applied to handcoverings of all descriptions, and the term glove is used merely for convenience.
The improved thumb joint herein described, while applicable to the finest qualities of gloves, is designed more particularly for the heavier classes of hand coverings, such as driving gloves, workmens gloves, and base-ball and athletic mitts.
Having described my invention, what I claim is* 7o 1. A glove or hand-covering provided with an open thumb-joint, a loose internal flap covering said joint, and a pocket into which the flap loosely extends; substantially as described.
2. A glove or hand-covering provided with an open thumb-joint, a loose flap extending from the thumb across the joint, and under the palm portion, and a pocket in which the flap loosely projects, substantially as described.
'In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Davin w. HANNA.
