SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,537, dated July 24, 1900. Application filed May 17, 1900. Serial No. 17,001. (No model.)

To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-

Beit known that I, HARRY GREENWOOD, a citizen of the United States,residing at Barnesborough, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners;

and I do declare the following to be a full,

whereby the claw-bar will be retained inl proper position with respect to the wick-tube and wick therein and provision made forholding lamp-chimneys of different sizes.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved lampburner. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the wicktube and its attaching-plate removed from the burner, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the claw-bar.

In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.

Referring to said drawings, l denotes a claw-bar which extends through a portion of the body of the burner and is formed with a head 2, provided with teeth 3,which are adapted to project through a longitudinally-disposed opening e in the wick-tube and engage the wick. This wick-tube is soldered or other-y wise secured to a circularand preferably conV vex plate 5', which is in turn soldered or other wise secured to the collar 6 of lthe burner. The side walls of the longitudinally-disposed opening through which the head of the claw-bar projects into engagement with the wick are provided with parallel verticallydisposed guide-flanges 5, preferably formed integral with the tubethat is to say, stamped out.

Ooiled around this claw-bar and confined between the burner and the head of the clawbar is a spring '7, the energy 0f which is exerted to force the teeth into the wick and to hold the wick in its adjusted position.

In operation if it be desired to elevate the wick the claw-bar is grasped and pulled outward. Thence the claw teeth are swung downward by elevating the upper end of the bar and engage with the wick. Then by depressing the bar the wick is elevated the dis'- tance of movement of the claw-bar. A reverse movement of the bar will lower the Wick.

When adjusted, it will be noticed that owing to the tension of the spring the wick will be held firmly in place, so thatthere will be no liability of its being jarred down if the lamp is suddenly placed upon a table or if the burner be used for a lantern when the lantern is vioL lently swung in giving signals.

The guide-flanges provide against the accidental shifting of the claw-head from engagement with the wick, due to careless manipulation of the claw-bar.

It will of course be understood that various lchanges in the form, proportiomand the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a lamp-burner provided with an opening in its vertical wall and with a longitudinal slot in its wick-tube, the sides of said slot being bounded by parallel vertical projecting guide-flanges which eX- tend from said wick-tube at angles thereto, of a claw-bar extending through said opening and providedv with a shouldered head, said head being provided with teeth in position to engage the wick through the slot in the tube, and a coil-spring around the bar, one end of which engages with the Wall of the burner and the other end engages with the shoulder of the head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
