PATEN JAMES ALLIN FREEMAN, OF BELLEVIEVV, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO 'LEW'IS LEGRAND HOPKINS, OF DANBURY, CONNECTICUT.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent NO. 653,994, dated July 1'7, 1900.
Application iiled May 16, 1900. Serial No. 16,858. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Belleview, in the county of Marion and State of Florida, have yinvented a new and Improved Plow, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Myiuvention relates to an improvement in plows, and especially to plow-stocks.
One purpose of the invention is to so construct the stock that cutters, sweeps, cultivator blades or shares, and the like may be flexibly or adj ustably applied thereto, so as to accommodate the plow to any character of soil, and also to provide a landside, which is attached to the stock, and means for adjustably securing sweeps or like blades upon the landside.
Another purpose of the invention is to so construct the landside and stock that when connected with the beams and handles the plow will operate close to a line of fence.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved plow, all blades or cutters having been omitted. Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation of the rear portionof the plow and a partial longitudinal vertical section through the landside, illustrating the share in position on the stock. Fig. 3 is avertical transverse section through the landside, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation of the lower portion of the improved stock and connecting portion of the landside, illustrating the application of a cutter to the stock. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a toothed sweep capable of being used in connection with the landside.
A represents a beam, to which the improved stock B is secured, and a landside O is attached at its forward end to the stock B or is made integral therewith. The landside is preferably of such length that handles D may be attached to an offset 10 at the rear portion of the landside, the said handles bein'glikewise secured to the beam A. The lower-portion of the front face 11 of the stock B is curved, so that it may receive the back portion of a cutter or a cultivator-blade 14, a share, or the equivalent thereof, and such blade or share is adjustably secured to the 6o stock by passing a suitable bolt 13 through the blade or share and through a longitudinal slot 12 made in the plow-stock. A depression or recess l5 is made in the left-hand lside of the stock B at the curved face portion 11, and the recess extends to the front of the stock. This recess 15 is adapted to receive a cutter 16, which, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, extends beyond the front face of the stock,
having a shoulder 17 adapted to bear against 7o the said face; but the cutter 16 does not extend to the longitudinal slot 12 in the stock, and the fastening devices employed to attach the blade or cutter 16 in position are preferably short screws 18, as shown in Fig. 5, so
that these screws shall not extend into the longitudinal slot 12 of the stock and interfere with the adjustment of the main bolt 13.
The landside is provided with an inverted- T slot 19, made longitudinally therein, and 8o an angular standard 2O is mounted for vertical movement on the upper face of the landside, the upright portion of the standard having a longitudinal slot 2l made therein. The
standard 2O is held on the landside by means 85 of a bolt 22, having a suitable nut, and the head 23 of this bolt extends into the side portions of the wider section of the T-slot 19, as is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The standard is prevented from accidentally moving side- 9o The body portion of the landside C may be made of wood or it may be made of metal, and the body portion of the landside is provided with a bottom section 25, which is also preferably of metal, and this bottom section 25 is removed when the bolt 23 is placed in the T- Ico slot 19. The bottom section 25 of the landside is held in engagement with the body by' bolts 26, the heads of said bolts being countersunk in the under face of the bottom section 25.
In Fig. 6 I have illustrated a form of sweep E, which is adj ustably carried by the upright portion of the standard 20 and is adjustably held thereon by means of a suitable bolt. This sweep consists of a central bridge or arched section 27, which receives the upright portion of the standard, and side sections 28, extending in opposite directions from the central arched section. As shown, these side sections may be provided with downwardlyextending points 29, or the points may be omitted and the side sections may be given a rearward or a forward inclination.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The plow-stock having a recess l5 in one side and provided with transverse bolt-holes which open in the said recess, whereby said stock is adapted for attachment of a cutter, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the plow stock or frame having a horizontal portion which is slotted lengthwise, of the standard 2O which is obtuse-angled and provided with a lengthwise slot in its elevated portion, and means for attaching the horizontal portion of said standard to the stock, adjustably, as shown and described.
3. In a plow, the combination, with a stock having a longitudinal slot therein extending from the front to the rear, and a recess in one side of the slotted portion of the stock, of a landside having a removable bottom section, the landside being attached to the bottom portion of the stock, and said landside having also an inverted-T-shaped longitudinal slot produced therein, a standard adapted to receive a sweep or a like device, and a bolt adapted to secure the standard to the landside, the head of which bolt is located in the wider portion of the slot in the said landside, for the purpose set forth.. v
4. In a plow, the combination, with abeam, a stock secured to the beam, the stock having its front face curved and a slot produced therein extending to the rear, the said stock having also a recess in one side extending to its front surface, of alandside attached to the said stock, the landside having an inverted- T-shaped slot therein, a standard having a foot-section mounted for movement on the landside, the upright portion of the standard having a longitudinal slot therein, a bolt passed through the foot of the standard, the head of which bolt is Within the wider portion of the said T-slot, and handles attached to the rear portion of the landside and to the said standard, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES ALLIN FREEMAN.
