VALVE-GEAR FOR ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,916, dated July 1'7, 1900.
Application filed April 25, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDUARD KNIG, a civil engineer and manager of the Ascherslebener Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellschaft, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Aschersleben, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oompulsory Valve- Gears for Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
In the so-called compulsory valve-gears that have become known up to now in a great variety of modifications the valves are raised compulsorily, it is true, but the closing of the valves must be efiected by springs. This manner of actuation, with regard to the closing of the valves by springs, is connected, espeeially with high-speed engines with a number of serious drawbacks, which now shall be overcome by the subject-matter of this in- Vention.
In order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters denote similar parts throughout the different views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved valve-gear. Fig. 2 shows,on a larger scale,the
mechanisms employed for opening the valve;
and Fig. 3 shows, on the same scale, the mechanisms for closing the valves.
Referring to the figures, the valve-rod a is connected with a lever 0, having its fulcrum upon a pivot 6, located in the valve-frame of the engine. The lever 0 forms a hollow link and embraces a slide d, attached to a lever e, havingits fulcrum upon a pivotf, located also in said valve-frame. The rod 9 of the eccentric is connected to said lever e and moves the same to and fro, as indicated by the arrow in Figs. 2 and 3, the said lever being thus caused to execute oscillatory movements. If now the lever 6, under the influence of the regulator, is caused to move to theleft, the valve will be opened by the mechanism of the hollow link 0; but if the lever e is moved to the right the valve will be closed, the movement being in either case a compulsory "one. As will be understood without a detailed description,the rod g, which actuates the lever e, is actuated itself in known manner by means of the cocentric h. The movement of the valve depends on the shape of the curve of the slot in Serial No. 14,221. (No model.)
the link c, and also the velocity of the movement, especially with regard to the closing of the valve, may be determined by a special 5' 5 form of curve. The latter may be such that the valve proper gets down upon its seat with out any shock at all.
All which has above been described with regard to the inlet-valve relates also to the outlet-valve. In both the cases the number of the movable parts of the Valve-gear is reduced to a minimum, and thus also the mass of the material of the respective parts is correspondingly reduced. The guide-piece d in the guide-slot of the link 0 may be made correspondingly long, so that the frictional resistan'ce per unit of area is so small that also a great reduction in the wear and tear is obtained. Eccentric pressures and the inclined positions of the valves produced therefrom are completely avoided. These advantages are combined with the further advantage that also the closing of the valve occurs quick and without any shock, and the whole valve-gear is, from all these reasons, especially suited for engines with a high speed.
Having now fully described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a valve-gear with compulsory actuation of the valves, the combination with the valve and the valve-rod, of a lever forming a slotted link and being connected to said rod, a guide-piece adapted to be moved along in the slot of said link, a lever carrying said guide-piece, and means for operating said lever, for the purpose as described.
2. In a valve-gear with compulsory actuation of the valves, the combination with the valve and the valve-rod, of a lever having a curved slot and being connected to said rod, a guide-roll adapted to be moved along in said curved slot, a lever carrying said guide-roll, a rod connected to said lever and adapted to oscillate the same, and means for operating said rod, substantially and for the purpose as described.
