.T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM F. KEANE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Explosive Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in oil-cans, and more particularly to that class known as non-explosive oil-cans. v
Tlfe invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby an oil-can is so constructed that an explosion cannot take place.
The invention has for its further object to provide a cover that may be easily removed and will be forced from its seat or position when the gases in the can are of sufficient pressure.
The invention has for its still further object to construct a can of the above-referredto class that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, and efficient in its operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views thereof, in Which Figure l is a side elevation of the top of an oil-can with my improvement attached thereto, showingthe same in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cap partly removed.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, l indicates the body of an oil-can, which is formed of converging sides, thesaid body portion carrying an extension 2, having substantially the form of a truncated cone. The reference-numeral 3 indicates a coneshaped cap or hood adapted to fit over the extension 2, the sides 4 of said hood being of greater diameter than the portion 2 and being also substantially in the form of a truncated cone, resting lightly on lthe cone extension 2. Chains 5 are secured to the sides 4 and to the body portion of the can, these chains being arranged opposite each other. A link 6 is pivotally connected to a keeper S, which is secured to the sides 4 of the hood 3, said link slidably secured to a staple 7 which is. rigidly secured to the body portion of the can. As the contents of the can are discharged through the discharge-spout the gases in the can, should they become unduly heated, will eX- plode and force the cone-shaped hood from its seat, thus providing a vent or outlet for the exploded gases and preventing an explosion of the contents of the can.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction of my improved oil-can without depart-ing from the general spirit of my invention.-
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with the body of the can, of the truncated cone-shaped extension 2 mounted thereon, a hood having an annular band i in the shape of a truncated cone to conform to the shape of the extension 2 and adapted to lightly engage the periphery of the same when the hood is in position, and means connected to the body of the can and to said annular band 4 for supporting the hood when removed from the extension 2, said extension being of such size as will readily vent the can when the gases are unduly heated and thereby preventing an explosion of the contents of the can, substantially as described.
2.
