HEEL-ATTACHING MACHINE.

Be itknown thatl, FREEBORN F. RAYMOND, 2d, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heel-Attaching Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention is an improvement upon that described in my application for Letters Patent of the United States filedJanuary 19, 1898, Serial No. 667,160. In said application I have shown and described a nail and heel carrier and a top-lift carrier which are arranged to be rotated or turned upon a horizontal axis, but which do not reciprocate with the driving or spanking mechanismand which are fixed in their relation to each other. In my present invention the nail and heel carrier and the top-lift carrier and spanker are rotated or oscillated upon a vertical arc, and the top-lift carrier and spanker is also made movable in respect to the nail and heel carrier and is fed into operative position without moving the nail and heel carrier out of operative position, whereby it becomes possible to locate and hold it closely to the nail and heel carrier when the latter is in operative position and to then also automatically or otherwise move it into operative position without moving the nail and heel carrier.
It further relates to means for automatically moving said top-lift carrier into operative position and for holding it out of operative position, also to means for oscillating or rotating the nail and heel carrier and the topliftcarrier and spanker simultaneously and from operative or attaching positions to receiving positions and from receiving positions to operative or attaching positions, and which oscillating movement may be caused by the movement of the jack out of and into operative position or by movement of an independent lever or by the movement of the treadle in starting the machine.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in front elevation of a machine having the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section upon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the nail and heel holder and top-lift spanker and carrier in receiving positions and the jack removed from attaching position. Fig. 3 is a view upon the same section, enlarged, representing the center and upper parts of the machine only and the nail and heel carrier and top-lift carrier and spanker after they have been turned to operative position, the jack also being represented in operative position. Fig. 4 is a view in vertical section, enlarged, upon the dotted line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view in cross vertical section upon the dotted line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a view, partly in end elevation and partly in section, of the nail and heel holder and carrier and top-lift carrier and spanker, in their reversed or receiving position. Fig. 7 is a view representing the top-lift-centering device as provided with a handle by means of which it may be readily opened for the reception of a top lift. Fig. 8 is a detail view, in vertical section, taken through the nail and heel holder and top-lift carrier and spanker when in the position represented in Fig. 6.
The invention is applied to a machine having the organization of that described in my said application. The nail-drivers A and the last B and' the nail and heel carrier Coperate in relation to each other as therein de-- scribed. The nail and heel carrier is adapted to receive nails loose or otherwise and heels in an inverted position and to transfer them from the inverted or receiving position to the attaching position. The last or work support, with the unheeled shoe upon it, and
the drivers are then movable in relation to the nail and heel carrier, the heel, and the attaching-nails as described in said application, and the heel compressed and attached to the shoe.
The nail and heel carrier may have what is known as the multiple-die construction, in which event the driver-block a would carry multiple drivers to correspond. The nail and heel carrier is mounted upon the frame C of the machine to be oscillated or turned, as described in said application. The toplift carrier and spanker D is mounted upon the carrier C to be oscillated thereon and lo tated therewith. It is attached thereto in any desired way, and I have represented for this purpose the supports or rings (1 d upon either side of the central section 0 of the nail and heel carrier. These rings are preferably madethicker atthe points (1 where they receive the top-lift carrierand spanker, in order that the toplift carrier and spanker may be set away from the carrier at sufficient distance to permit the closing movement of the carrier or spanker outside the nailand heel holder, or to the position represented in Figs. 4 and 5. The top-lift carrier and spanker comprises a plate d which is attached to these thickened parts of the supports or wings and has a dovetailed recess d in its outer surface; also, a sliding plate (1 having a dovetailed tongue d to fit said dovetailed recess, and which is adjustablelengthwise the plate (1 by means of an ad justing-screw d carried by the ear d of the plate and screwing into a threaded hole (Z in the ear (Z of the plate d The outer surface of the plate cl forms the spanking-surface, and there is mounted upon this outer surface the top-lift holding and centering devices, which are well shown in Fig. 1 and which comprise the two arms c e, pivoted to the plate (1 at e 6 respectively, and geared together near the pivotal points by the sector-gears e a so that the movement of one arm causes the other arm to be moved the same extent, but in an opposite direction. Each arm also has a breast-gage e, against which the breast of the top lift is held, and ends e which bear against the edge of the top lift near its back end and serve to hold the breast of the top lift in contact with the breast-gages. Each arm also has the ear 6 extending forward from the pivotal point, and between which arms there is arranged a coiled compression-spring e for closing the arms upon the top lift and holding them closed with a yielding pressure. This provides a very simple and ellective top-lift centering and holding device. It is attached to the plate (Z to be movable with it lengthwise the plate (1 for the purpose of longitudinally adjusting the position of the top lift in respect to the heel. The rings (1 d are arranged to turn upon the carrier C, so that the top-lift carrier and spanker may be movable on the carrier in respect to the nail and heel holder 0. In its inoperative position the top-lift carrier and spanker is usually held latched back from the nail and heel holder and carrier, as represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and against the pressure of the closing-spring l, which is contained in a cavity in one of the rings 01 (Z, is curved to the form of the carrier, has one end attached to or held stationary by it, and bears at its other end against the ring at the end of the recess. It is adapted to automatically move the top-lift spanker and carrier from the position represented in Fig. 3 to the position represented in Fig 4 upon the release of the latch F. The said latch is represented as pivoted at fon the side of the part d of the ring (Z and as having a latching end f to engage a latching-shoulder f on the carrier 0. It is held in engagement with said latchingshoulder by the spring f It is adapted to be moved down automatically to disengage the ring and the top-lift carrier from the heelcarrier and to permit the automatic movement to the top-lift carrier into operative position by means of the push-rod f which is adapted to engage the extension f 5 of the latch F. This push-rod is movable upward and downward in any desired way, and in the drawings I have shown its lower end f as connected with a cam f on the shaft j, which is constructed to impart to the rod vertical movements at the desired intervals.
The latch may be moved to disengage the toplift carrier upon the first upward movement of the jack, in which event the top-lift carrier and spanker will not be immediately movable under the nail and heel holder, as it will be prevented from so moving until the heel on the heel-holder has been attached and the heeled shoe and last have moved downward sufficiently to remove the heel from the front edge of the top-lift carrier and then permit of its interposition between the heelholder and attached heel. (See Fig. 4.) The nail and heel holder is adapted to receive loose nails or a loaded heel-blank. The receiving position of the nail and heel holder and of the top-lift carrier and spanker may he in any position removed from over the last or work-support best adapted for the purpose. It will be understood, of course, that after the attachment of the heel-blank and top lift the top-lift spanker and carrier is moved back to permit the latch F to engage and hold it and to also uncover the nail and heel holder in order that the nails and heel may be placed therein and thereon or a loaded heel placed upon it. It is preferable that this be done after the heel-carrier and the top-lift carrier have been moved together to receiving position.
I have shown for turning the nail and heel holder and the top-lift carrier and spankera mechanism comprising a segment-gear II on the carrier 0 and a sector-gear h at the upper end of the arm h, pivoted at 7L2. The sector 7L meshes with the gear, and upon an inward movement of the sector h the nail and heel holder and top-lift carrier and spanker are turned from their highest to their lowest po; sition, (see Figs. 2 and 8,) and upon the reverse movement of the sector they are turned backward from their lowest to their highest position. This sector h may have at each end a handle by which cit-her the operator or his assistant may turn the nail and heel holder and top-lift carrier and spanker, or the sector-arm h may be connected with aslide or hinged jack, so that the movement of the jack from its inoperative position in front of the attaching devices to a position in line therewith will also cause the nail and heel holder and the top-lift carrier and spanker to be moved from inoperative position to a position to bring the heel in line with the jack. In Figs. 2 and 3 I have represented a horizontally-sliding jack K connected with said arm by a link 72. the arm having an extension 7% below its pivotal point to which the link is secured. It will be observed that the connection is such that the inward movement of the jack causes the sector It to be moved and the nail and heel holder and the top-lift spanker and carrier to be turned downward by it and that the outward movement of the jack causes a reverse movement of the nail and heel holder and the top-lift carrier and spanker.
I prefer to firstplace the top lift inthe toplift holder while it is over the heel-holder and to then move the top-lift holder forward to compress its actuating-spring and engage its retaining-latch and then place the nails and heel. (See Fig. 2.) Any suitable jack may be employed, and it may be provided with vertical movement by any desired mechanism. In the drawings, as above stated, I have represented asliding jack. This jack is movable upon the bed 75 in suitable ways. It has the spindle k, which is vertically adjustable by means of the nut and the spindle and nut are movable vertically when the jack is in operative position bythe pressure-head 70 which is moved upward by the cam is on the shaft f This cam is constructed to move the pressure-head, and thereby the last or work-support carried by the spindle is, to the two levels necessary, first, for the compression and attachment of the heel, and, second, for the spanking of the top lift. The first of these movements is imparted by the cam-section 70 and the second by the cam-section 706. A cam-roll may be interposed between the pressure-head Z0 and the cam. The shaft f is represented as geared by gearing 10 with a shaft 7c, the outer end of which shaft 70 carries crank-pins la which are connected with the head 7a, to which the nail-drivers are attached and which extends through the cavity of the heel-carrier by means of connecting-rods R (See Fig. 1.) The shaft 76 may also be geared to a power-shaftk upon which there may be a balance-wheel and also a clutch for starting and stopping the machine. I do not, however, confine myself to these specific devices for imparting vertical movem entsto the last or work-support. The heelcarrier is also provided with a hole M, opposite the perforated section,which when the perforated section is in its highest position will be below the drivers and in line with them, and an accidental starting of the machine can then cause no harm, as the drivers will reciprocate through this hole, where otherwise they would come into contact with the inner surface of the carrier.
While the perforated part of the heel-carrier is represented as integral with the remainder, I would say that this is done simply for the purpose of convenience; but in practice said part would be made removable from the rest of the device.
In use the nail and heel holder in its receiving position is supplied with loose nails and a heel or with a loaded heel, and a top lift is placed in the top-lift-holding device of the top-lift carrier and span ker. The nail and heel holder and top-lift carrier and spanker are then moved either by hand or by the act of moving the jack into operative position, and the heel and its attachingnails are brought into line with the last on the jacleand the top-lift spanker and carrier, with the top lift,is also brought to a position immediately behind the nail and heel holder. (See Fig. 3.) The machine is then started. The jack is moved upward, forcing the last and the shoe thereon into contact with the heel and the heel holder slightly in advance-of the driving of the nails and maintaining that forcible contact during the driving of the nails. The jack, shoe, and attached heel are then moved downward, or away from the nail and heel.

The jack is then moved forward and by such movement, and if it is connected with the nail and heel holder the said nail and heel holder and the top-lift carrier and spanker are turned backward together to their receiving position; otherwise they are turned back together by hand,and the helper moves the top-lift carrier and spanker from over the nail and heel holder until it is automatically engaged and restrained by its latch.
It will be seen that the nail and heel holder remains in its attaching position during the attachment of the top lift. This insures a quicker feeding of the top lift than where the heel-holder is moved out of operative position to make room for the top-lift spanker and carrier, as in my said application, as it per mits a relatively-light top-lift spanker and carrier to be brought into such close relation to it that it maybe easilyand quickly moved into operative position as soon as the heel is attached. It will also be seen that the nail and heel holder and top-lift spanker and carrier are moved back together to receiving position and there separated to expose the nail and heel holder and to bring both the nail and heel holder and the top-lift spanker and carrier into such position that both may be readily supplied with nails and a heel and with a top lift before the machine is started, which assists in the quicker operation thereof. I
In Fig. 7 I have represented one of the' arms of the top-lift holder as provided with the extension X, which forms or provides a handle by means of which the two arms may The jack, shoe, and attachedbe opened and held opened by hand as a preliminary to the placing of the top lift between the arms when they are permitted to close by the release of the handle to center the top lift in the holder.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of movement of the drivers when the nail and heel carrier is in its stationary and receiving position with the vertically-movable last or works upport, and with the vertically-movable drivers, as and for the purposes described.
2. In a heel-nailing machine the combination of a nail and heel carrier movable upon a vertical are from its receiving position to a position between the drivers and the last or work-support,the said drivers and the said last or work-support, and an independent top-lift carrier and spanker also movable upon a vertical are, and adapted to be interposed between the nail and heel carrier and the last or work support after the attachment of the heel.
3. In a heel-attaching machine the combination of a nail and heel holder and carrier movable upon a vertical are from receiving to operating position, a top-lift carrier and spanker movable with the nail and heel holder and carrier and also independently movable in relation thereto, whereby they may both be moved together from receiving position, and whereby also the top-lift carrier and spanker after the attachment of the heel may by a shortmovement be immediately movedinto operative position without movl for permitting its movement beneath the same ing the nail and heel holder and carrier.
4. In a heel-nailing machine a nail and closely to the nail and heel holder, whereby they both occupy a receiving position at the same time, as and for the purposes described.
5. The combination in a heel-nailing machine of a gang of nail-drivers, means for reciprocating them vertically, a last or worksupport, means for reciprocating it upon the line of reciprocation of the drivers, and a toplift carrier and spanker movable upon a vertical are with respect to the nail-drivers and the last or work-support into and out of operative position between them.
6. In a heel-nailing machine the combination of a nail and heel holder and carrier movable upon a vertical are, a top-lift carrier and spanker, means for closing it over the exposed face of the nail and heel holder and carrier, and devices for preventing said clos in g of the said top-lift carrier and spanker.
7. The combination in a heel-nailing machine of a nail and heel holder and carrier movable upon a vertical are, a top-lift carrier and spanker movable upon a vertical are, an automatic device for moving the top-lift spanker and carrier to a position in line with the nail and heel holder and carrier and between it and the jack, the said jack as and for the purposes described.
8. The combination in a heel-nailing machine of a nail and heel holder and carrier movable upon a vertical are from a receiving to operative position, a top-lift carrier and spanker movable upon a vertical are from a receiving to operative position, automatic means for moving said top-lift carrier and spanker to a position in line with said nail and heel holder and carrier when in operative position, and means for holding said top-lift holder and carrier away-from said nail and heel holder, as and for the purposes described.
9. The combination in a heel-nailing machine of a nail and heel holder and carrier movable upon a vertical are from a receiving to an attaching position, a top-lift carrier and spanker movable from a receiving to an attaching position independently of the movement of the nail and heel holder and carrier and adapted to be brought into line with the said nail and heel holder and carrier, and upon the same side of the center of the are upon whichthey are both movable.
10. The combination in a heel-nailing machine of a nail and heel holder and carrier movable upon a vertical are from a receiving to an attaching position, a top-lift carrier and spanker automatically movable from a receiving position to an attaching position beneath the nail and heel holder and top-lift spanker, and carrier holding and releasing mechanism for holding the carrier and spanker removed from the nail and heel holder and after the attachment of the heel.
11. In a heel-nailing machine the combination of a nail and heel holder movable upon a vertical are from a receiving to an attaching position, a top-lift carrier and spanker movable from a receiving to an attaching position beneath the nail and heel holder and carrier, a spring for so moving said top-lift carrier and spanker and a latch for holding the top-lift carrier and spanker against the pressure of the spring, as and for the purposes described. 7
12. In a heel-nailing machine the combination of a nail and heel holder movable upon a vertical are from a receiving to an attaching position, a top-lift carrier and spankermovable from a receiving to an attaching position beneath the nail and heel holder and carrier, a spring for so moving said top-lift carrier and spanker and an automatic latchrelcase operative during the attachment of IIO the heel to release the top-lift carrier and spanker and permit it to be moved against the heel and upon the removal of the heel from the heel-holder to also permit the top lift carrier and spanker to be automatically moved into attaching position beneath the heel and nail holder and carrier.
13. The combination of a nail and heel holder and carrier adapted to be oscillated or turned upon a vertical are from a receiving to an attaching position but to be non-movable vertically during the attaching operation, with a top-lift carrier and spanker movable with said nail and heel holder and carrier from receiving position and also independently movable of said nail and heel holder and carrier but non-movable when in attaching position, the nail-driving devices, the last or work-support and means for movin g it vertically during the heel-attachin g and top-lift spanking operations.

The combination in a heel-nailing machine of the nail and heel carrier and holder, supports for thetop-lift carrier and spanker vertically movable thereon, having theoutwardly-extending sections d with a crossplate supported by said sections, an adjustable spanker-plate carried upon the outer side of said cross-plate and top-lift centering devices mounted upon said adjustable plate.
15. The combination of'the nail and heel holder and carrier supported by the frame of the machine and movable upon a vertical are, a support for a top-lift carrier and spanker mounted upon said nail and heel holder and carrier to be movable thereon, a top-lift spanker and carrier carried by said movable support, a means to bear against said top-lift carrier and spanker to move the same, and a latch to hold the top-lift carrier and spanker away from the nail and heel holder and carrier and in opposition to the stress of the means for moving said top-lift carrier and spanker.
16. In a heel-attaching machine the combination of a vertically-reversible nail and heel holder and carrier, a last or Work-support movable into and out of operative position, and devices connecting the jack with the reversible nail and heel holder and carrier whereby it is movable from a receiving to an attaching position and vice versa by the movement of the jack into and out of operative position.
17. The combination in a heel-attaching machine of a vertically-reversible nail and heel holder and carrier, a gear mounted thereon, a movable last or work-support and an intermediate sector connected with the last or Work-support and meshing with said gear.
18. In a heel-attaching machine the combination of a vertically-reversible nail and heel holder and carrier, a vertically-reversible toplift carrier and spanker, a jack movable into and out of operative position connected with said carriers to reverse the same upon its movements,as and for the purposes described.
19. The combination in a heel-attaching machine of a vertically-reversible nail and heel holder and carrier, and a vertically-reversible toplift carrier and spanker, also movable relatively with respect to the nail and heel holder and carrier, a horizontally and vertically movable jack means for connecting said jack With said nail and heel holder and carrier and adapted to be actuated upon the movement of the jack intoand out of operative position to cause the nail and heel holder and carrier to be moved from receiving to attaching position and vice versa as and for the purpose set forth.
20. In a heel-attaching machine a verticall y-reversible nail and heel holder and carrier and a vertically-reversible top-lit t carrier and spanker adapted to be reversible together,
and the said top-lift carrier and spanker also having an additional movement relative to the nail and heel holder and carrier.
21. In a heel-attaching machine a verti cally-reversible nail and heel holder and carrier, a vertically-reversible top-lift carrier and spanker reversible simultaneously with the nail and heel holder and carrier and also movable relatively thereto, the said nail and heel holder and said top-lift carrier being stationary in operative position with a reciprocating gang of drivers, and a jack movable vertically toward and from the heel-holder and from the top-lift carrier and spanker, as and for the purposes set forth.
22. The combination in a heel-attaching machine of a vertically-reversible nail and heel holder and carrier, a vertically-reversible top-lift carrier and spanker, the top-lift carrier and spanker being also movablp relatively to the nail and heel-holder and carrier, ajack, and means for compressing the heel between the jack and heel-holder in advance of the driving of the attaching-nails and for spanking the top-lift and nail-driving de vices.
