UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
VILLIAM G. JOHNSON AND IVILLIAM II. CLARK, OF KINGFISHER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 651,440, dated. l' une 12, 190'.' Application i'iled November 16, 1899.- Serlal No. 737,176. (No model.) v
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM Gr. JOHNSON and WILLIAM H. CLARK, citizens of the United States, residing at Kinglisher,in the county of Kingfisher and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and we dode- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
The invention relates to washing-machines.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and edective machine which shall be of such construction that the soiled clothes contained within the rotary drum will be plunged into the water with a douse, thereby more effectual ly cleansing the clothes than if the rotary movement were even and uniform in its velocity.
To this end the invention consists inv certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. p
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved washingmachine, the cover of the suds-box being removed to more clearly illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is an end View 0f the eccentric drum removed from its bearings and from its connection with the clothes-drum.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
1 denotes the suds-box, and 2 the clothesdrum, having a perforated segmental bottom 3 and a removable top 4, through which the clothes to be washed are introduced. This drum has one of its ends provided with a studbearing, (not shown,)which engages abearing in the sides of the suds-box in the usual manner, and the other end is provided with a bearing-strap 7 having a polygonal opening 8.
9 denotes a bracket secured to the side of the suds-box, and 10 denotes a drum having an eccentric axis 11, one end of which is provided with a polygonal head 12 to engage the polygonal aperture in the strap aforesaid and the other end of which is provided with a stud-bearing 13 to engage a bearing in the saidbracket. l
14 denotes an operating-lever suitably pivoted in an extension .15 of the bracket and movement into the water in the suds-box, A
thus causing the same to be forced upwardly through the perforations with considerable force against the clothes contained in the drum, and thereby effectually cleansing the same.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of our improved washingmachine will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
It will be seen that the device is simple, that its construction permits of its manufacture at a small cost, and that it is exceedingly well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed, and it will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without requiring an extended explanation or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
In a clothes-washer, the combination with the suds-box; of a clothesdrum suitably mounted therein, a suitably-mounted eccentric drum connected with the clothes-drum, an operating-lever, and cords or straps connecting the eccentric drum with the operating-lever, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing wit- DQSSGS.
