The object of my invention is to provide an improved water-gratefor furnaces comprising hollow grate-bars through-which a stream of water is made to ow continuously to not only preserve the grate-bars, but also provide for feeding the boilerwith hot water.
It is a well-known fact that the ordinary solid grate-bars burn out very rapidly owing to the intense heat of the coals which they support, and it is also well known that' the provision of hollow grate-bars and means for causinga ilow of water through the same tends to keep the bars at a temperature which will not overheat or injure them. My invention therefore contemplates the production of a grate of this kind and includes devices for utilizing the water which is heated in the grate-bars as feed-water for the boiler; also, an arrangement to provide for shaking the grate and for readily cleaning out the gratebars.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed outin the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which like letters indicate similar parts in both views, Figure lis a plan view of a grate for furnaces constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end View of the grate.
In carrying out my invention the grate proper (designated by the letter A) is composed of'a number of hollow grate-bars or straight sections B, and in making up said grate the bars are connected to each other by elbow-couplings C, having flanges o. The grate-bars lie parallel with each other, and each bar is coupled at its ends to the adjoining bar in the manner shown to form a contin uous passage-way or serpentine course for the water.
' In coupling the hollow grate-bars bolts o are passed through the flanges c of the couplings C and plates D interposed between said flanges, the latter forming supporting-arms, as shown.
The grate-bar B at one end of the grate isA grate-bar at the other end of the grate is coupled to a discharge-pipe H by means of an inclined vertical pipe I and couplings h and z', the said discharge-pipe having aT- coupling J, by which a pipe L is connected thereto, and beyond said pipe L the dischargepipe is provided with a blow-off cock M. The
pipe L leads to the boiler (not shown) and is provided with a valve or cut-Off Z.
\By providing a series of hollow grate-bars to form the grate of a furnace and connecting said grate-bars to each other and to inlet and discharge pipes, in the manner hereinbeforc described, water can be caused to flow slowly through the grate-bars, and thereby keep the grate cool, and the water which is heated in its passage through the grate-bars can be introduced into a boiler as feed-water. In feeding the water to the boiler the cock M is closed and the valve Z opened, and in keeping up a circulation of water in the grate-bars the valve l may be closed and the cock M turned to direct the water through the discharge-pipe. In cleaning the grate-bars the valve E' in the supply-pipe is closed and steam is introduced through the pipeG, while the valve Z is closed and the blow-off cock M opened. grate-bars will remove any sediment that might collect therein.
