PECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 650,748, dated May 29, 1900.
PPlioatiOn filed September 25, 1297. Serial No. 653,046. (No man.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OsEPH F. BLMSDELL, of New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Dumping-Wagon, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved dumping-wagon for coal, sand, bricks, and other articles and material, the wagon being provided with a hydraulic lifting device arranged to enable the driver to conveniently bring the loaded box or body into an elevated or inclined position to allow of readily dumping the contents of .the box at a desired place.
The invention consists in such features of construction and combinations as will be fully described hereinafter and defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with part broken out and with the box or body elevated. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the tilting device for the box or body.
The wagon on which the device is applied is provided with the usual running-gear A and the box or body B, adapted to contain the coal, sand, brick, or other article or substance to be transported from one place to The box or body Bis pivotally connected at its under side by brackets C with a bracket D, attached to the upper end of the plunger E of a hydraulic jack E, having its cylinder E supported by the running-gear A. The pump F for forcing waterinto the cylinder E and raising the plunger E and the box or body B is likewise secured to the runninggear A and is provided with a handle F under the control of the operator for working the pump for the purpose mentioned. A Water-supply vessel G is also carried on the running-gearA and is connected with the pump and the cylinder E so that the water from the said supply vessel can pass to the pump and be forced by the latter into the cylinder desired to load the same the cylinder ll. is connected by a suitable valve and pipe with the supply vessel G to return the water from the cylinder to the said vessel and to allow the plunger E to descend back into the cylinder. Now by the arrangement described the driver of the wagon by manipulating the handle or lever F can readily work the hydraulic jack E and force the plunger E upward to lift the box and its contents, and then the box can be turned, as the plunger E is free to turn in its cylinder E so that the delivery end of the box or body can be brought directly over the place for dumping the contents of the wagon.
The box or body B can be moved into an inclined position after it is elevated, and for this purpose I provide the following device: On the under side of the body B and at one side of the brackets O is secured a bracket H, on which is fulcrumed a toothed segment I, formed at its inner face with a track I, engaged by a roller J, journaled in a bracket J, attached to the bracket D. The segment I is in mesh with a segment K, secured on a shaft K, journaled in suitable bearings in the bracket D, and on the said shaft is secured a longitudinally-extending arm K projecting at its inner end beyond the front of the box or body to be within convenient reach of the op erator. Now when the arm K is swung down ward the segment K, meshing with the segment'I, causes the latter to move upward, so that a push is exerted against the box-body B at one side of the pivot-brackets O to move the box or body into an inclined position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the desired position has been reached, the arm K is locked in place by a pin L, adapted to engage an aperture in the said arm and aregistering aperture of a series formed in a segment N on an arm formed on or attached to the bracket D. After the load has been dumped the pin L is removed, and the arm .K is swung back to its normal position, so
that the box or body is returned to its normal horizontal position and then looked in place by the pin L engaging the registering apertures in thearm K and the segment N. If
necessary, the body B is then turned around to be again in alinement with its running gear A, and then the cylinder E is connected Having thus fully described my invention, 7
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a support, a Wagonbody mounted to rock thereon, a toothed segment pivoted to the wagon-body, a roller held by the support and having the segment bearing against the same, and a second segment held by the support and meshed with the firstnained segment whereby to dump the Wagonbody.
2. The combination of a support, a Wagonbody mounted to rock thereon, a bracket carried by the support, a toothed segment pivoted to the wagon-body and guided on the bracketfand a second segment mounted on the bracket and meshed with the first segment.
3. The combination of a wagon-bed, a hydraulic cylinder supported rigidly by and located beneath the wagon-bed, a plunger working in the cylinder and capable of extending upwardly above the wagon-bed, a wagon-body mounted and rockable on the plunger so that the body may be elevated and tilted to dump the body, and means for creating pressure Within the cylinder, such means being carried by the wagon-bed.
JOSEPH F. BLAISDELL.
