Description
UNITED STATES EDVARD'IIOLM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. I
LUBRICANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,108, dated May 22, 1900.
Application filed Septe1nhcr13,'1 S 99.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD Roma, :1 citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State'of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricating Compounds; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention or discovery relates to a lubricating compound or wax that is more especially intended for use on commutators, and has for its object to provide a lubricant of this character that will prevent the com- "causing the parts to wear out very rapidly.
The present compound has for its object to provide a lubricant that will obviate such objectionable action'and greatly lengthen the life of the commutator.
The compoundconsists of solid paraffin, graphite, carbonate of magnesia, and volatile oil of citronella. In preparing the compound the proportions to each pound of the lubricant are as follows:
solid v paraffin, ten ounces; graphite, five ounces; magnesia, one ounce; oil of eitro- $erial No. 730,326. illospecimeus.)
nella, two ounces. The oil of citronella more especially serves the purpose of rendering the product comparatively odorless, as it is somewhat unpleasant when brought in contact with a heated surface. These ingredients areplaced in a suitable vessel, heated,
and thoroughly mixed together to form a homogeneous composition, which is then run into molds similar to the ordinary candlemolds, and when solidified is ready or use, The product when removed from the molds is in the form of sticks and is applied by holding one end in contact with the commutatorsurface as often as may be necessary to keep the parts in a good working condition.
This lubricant will efiectually prevent heating and sparking when properly applied.
,The proportions of the ingredients entering into thecornpound may be varied as circumstances require in using it on different kinds of machinery.
Having thus described my invention or discovery, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A solid lubricant, consisting of paraffin, graphite, magnesia, and oil of citronella, in about the proportions herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnessesf EDIVARD I'IOIIM,
\Vitnesses:
L. M. FREEMAN, L. B. COUPLANI).
