Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY KoLK- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to cracker-boxes and handles therefor; and the object thereof is to provide a cracker-box with a handle which shall be eflicient and at the same time cheap to manufacture, which handle shall form anintegral part of an element of the main construction.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as fully hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like reference characters denote like parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cracker-box constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of a box member which has to do particularly with my invention, showing the handle partially shaped. Fig. 3 is a plan. view of a blank from which a portion thereof is formed, being shown upon an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view, also upon an enlarged scale.

In the practice of my invention I provide a cracker-box 3 of the ordinary or any desired form and having a front member 4, provided with a transparent central portion 4, as is usual in this class of boxes, for the display of the contents.

The box 3 is composed of one or more sheets of metal soldered or otherwise secured together, and the entire box, inclusive of the top 5 and exclusive of the member 4, forms no part of my invention. The member 4 consists of a single sheet of tin or other metal cut out and provided with a glass 4 and provided with edge portions 6,which are crimped down about and secured to the walls of the box 8.

The member 4 is so cut and formed at one end as to form a handle, denoted by the general index character 7 in Fig. 1, and the handle 7 is composed structurally of the following elements: The member 4 is cutout at each side at one end of the open central portion thereof at 8 8, whereby to form a main tongue 9 of oblong shape. The tongue 9 has straight side edges 10 and a straight front edge 11, and from each of the side edges 10 projects a laterally-directed supplemental tongue 12. Each of the tongues 12 is projected obliquely as well as laterally from the tongue 9, the sides 12 thereof being straight and parallel and the end being of angular formation, whereby one portion 13 thereof parallels the adjacent edge 10 of the main tongue 9, and the other portion 14 thereof extends at an angle of ninety degrees with the adjacent side 12 of said tongue 12.

Previous to folding the tongues 9 and 12 to form the handle '7 the former is fold-lined transversely and parallelly, as at 15 and 16, 16 denoting the outer fold-line, and each of the tongues 12 is fold-lined transversely at 17 approximately in a line at right angles to the edges 12 thereof and terminating in one end of the fold-line 16.

The line of connection of the tongue 9 and box-top 5 is fold-lined, as at 18, parallel with thefold-lines 15 and 16, and the free edges 10 of said tongue extend to the ends of the fold-line 1S.

In forming the handle 7 the tongue 9 is bent obliquely outwardly upon the fold-line l8 and then parallelly backwardly upon the fold-line 15, and the outer portionof said tongue is folded upon the fold-line 16 and lapped beneath the adjacent portion of the box member 4. The tongues 12 are bent backwardly upon the line of their connection with the tongue 9, forming the ends of the handle 7, and the tongues 9 are then bent upon the fold-lines 12 and lapped under the adjacent portion of the box member 4.

By means of the formation, arrangement, and folding of the tongues 9 and 12 as above described the handle 7 is formed and is of convenient shape and relative location.

I do not limit myself to the specific form of handle nor the specific relative arrangement thereof, but reserve the right to vary the same within the scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A box member provided with an integral handle, consisting of a main tongue and two supplemental tongues which are 'cut and folded to form the several parts of the handle, portions of said tonguesbeing folded to engage said box member, being formed near an edge thereof, substantially as shown and described.

2. A box member provided with an integral handle, consisting of a main tongue 9, and supplemental tongues 12, said main tongue being provided with parallel fold- lines 15, 16,

and 18, and said supplemental tongues each with a fold-line 17, said tongues being folded upon said fold-lines to form said handle, the
