ATTORNEYS terior thereof.
' UNITED 77 STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRIETTA F.- DUKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. ASSIGNOR TO THE BUTTERIOK PUBLISHING COMPANY, LIMITED, OF SAME PLACE.
APPAREL WAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 649,980, dated May 22, 1900.
Application filed December 27, 1899. Serial No. 741,783. (No model.)
To (M6 whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRIETTA F. DUKE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waists and Patterns Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in waists and patterns therefor. By waists I mean garments to be worn on the upper part of the body, the said term including also outer garments.
The invention consists in a waist or pattern therefor within the definition hereinbe= fore given provided with a bust-stay, substantially as described, which dispenses with the necessity for using a body-lining extending from the neck to the waist-line in any body-garment where a body-lining might be desirable solely for the purpose of keeping in place the front or front and back of the bod ygarment.
In the accompanying drawingsIhave shown a garment embodying my invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the garment partly opened to show the in- Fig. 2 is a front or face view of the back section or division of the buststay. Fig. 3 is a similar view of each of two front sections or divisions of the bust-stay; and Fig. 4c is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1, showing the front of the garment buttoned together.
In the drawings, A represents the waist provided with a back portion a and front portions b c. The front portions 17 c are provided with means for securing them together by their edges. The garment may be provided with any desired collar (1, waistband e, and sleeves f. It will be observed that the front and back of the garment shown in the drawings have a plaited or loose-fittin g elfect, and to hold the waistentirely in the desired position I provide in the interior thereof a buststay which is adapted to surround the bust of the wearer, being secured to the garment in any desired manner. In the present instance this bust-stay is shown as a back section g, extending across the interior of the back a of the garment and secured to the garment at or near the armholes and in the said seams g of the garment. Secured to the ends of the back section g and in the said scams 9' and armhole seams are front sections h, whose forward ends are secured at or near the meeting edges of the garment. By observing Fig. 4 it will be noted that the buststay is adapted to totally surround the bust of the wearer and to contribute to the attainment of the proper loose-fitting effect of the waist F and at the same time act as a support for and to confine the portion of the figure which the said stay surrounds, thus making the garment specially, desirable for the use of women having portly figures. It will also be observed that this bust-stay is a narrow band located at ornear the bust of the wearer only, which requires much less material than a body-lining, is less heating to the body in summer than a body-lining would be, and at the same time holds the waist-front or front and back in proper position. In outline and efiect the bust-stay differs from a body-lining, inasmuch as it is shaped to and fits that portion of the body which it envelops in a manner difierent from the manner in which the body-lining would be shaped and fitted and in that it is fitted to its own special depth instead of from neck to waist-line and inother valuable particulars unnecessary to herein describe.
l-Iaving described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A waist A, substantially as described, comprising a body portion of more or less loosely-plaited material giving a draped efiect and having the narrow bust-stay in the interior of the waist adapted to tightly fit, the body of the wearer at or about the bust-line only, the said bust-stay consisting of the back section 9, secured to the waist at the armholes, and the front section h secured at the armholes of the waist and to the meeting ed ges of the waist.
2. .A waist A, substantially as described, terior of the waist and secured to the interior comprising a body portion of more or less of saidwaist at the'armholes'thereof and at loosely-plaitedinaterial givinga draped efiect ornear'the meeting edges of the waist. and having the narrow bust-stay in' the in- HENRIETTA F. DUKE.
