Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
L. AUGUR AND J. L. LORD, OF CHESTER, CONNECTICUT.
STOP FOR CARPENTERS BENCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,485, dated May 29, 1849.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we7 LEBBEUS AUGUR and JAMES L. LORD, both of Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Bench-Stops; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, in Which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 2 a vertical view of the socket, and Fig. 3 a vertical view of the head-plate or hook.
This invention is to be attached to the Work bench of a carpenter, joiner orcarriagemaker, for the purpose of holding planks, boards or timber While subjected to the process of planing. Bench hooks for this purpose have been long time in use; but in this improvement the hoo-k is rendered more permanent and convenient than any kind hitherto used. The hook consists of a horizontal plate A, on one edge of which several projecting teeth are formed for holding the planks Sac., and this plate is attached to a square vertical sliding bolt B. A metallic socket C D, is made of a convenient form and size to receive the hook and bolt, and allow the hook to descend so low that the top thereof may be on a level Withthe top of the socket. This socket is to be fitted into the bench in such a manner that the top of the socket may be on a level with the top of the bench; and having horizontal flanges C at the top, it is secured to the bench by screws e e which pass through the flanges. In the center of the bottom of the bolt is a screw hole, into which is inserted a vertical screw F, which also passes through a small plate G attached to the bottom of the socket. A collar H is attached to the screw above the collar, to prevent its descent; and a small crank I is attached to the bottom of the screw, Where it is turned when the bolt is to be elevated or depressed.
A square aperture K is made vertically through the flange of the socket, for the purpose of discharging dust or chips that may fall under the projecting teeth of the hook, and might otherwise prevent the descent of the hook and bolt.
vVhat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
That peculiarity of the construction of the socket C D which consists in the vertical aperture K.
LEBBEUS AUGUR, JAMES L. LORD.
