EXTENSION BRAKE-LEVER.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that We, WILLIAM L. Mon- FORD, residing at Maitland, in the county of Holt, and GEORGE E. AMBROSE, residing at Skidmore, in the county of Nodaway, State of Missouri, citizens of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension Brake-Levers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to brake-levers, and more particularly to that class used on wagonbrakes.

One object of this invention is to provide a wagon-brake with an extension-lever adapted to be employed when extra side-boards are used or when it is desired to carry a load of wood or like material.

Another object of this invention is to provide an extension brake-lever which can be easily and quickly adjusted to the desired height and will efficiently perform all of its intended functions.

With these objects in view and such others as may hereinafter appear ourinvention consists in certain details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter.

The specific points of novelty will be designated in claims which are intended to accord in their terms, spirit, and meaning with the prior state of the art and the existing law.

In the drawings forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved brake, illustrating the lever in the raised or extended position. Fig. 2 is a perspective View illustrating the lever in the closed or lowered position.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, A represents a frame having a segmental plate B at its top, provided with a series of ratchet-teeth O and a guide-rod D. To the base of the frameis pivotally secured our improved extension-lever, which projects upward between the ratchet-teeth and the guiderod. The lower section E of the lever is provided with a lug F, adapted to engage the ratchet-teeth on the segmental plate and to hold the brake in the desired position. The portion above the ln g is provided with ratchetteeth G upon one edge thereof and a loop H at the top, the object of which will be hereinafter explained. Theupper portion I of the lever is formed with a foot-brace J upon one end and a loop K upon the other. The loop K is adapted to slide freely over the lower section and support the upper section, which is also supported by the loop H. Pivotally secured to the lower section is a pawl L, adapted to engage the ratchetteeth G and to hold the lever at the desired height. This pawl is operated by a rod M, whichis connected to the hand-leverN, pivoted approximately near the top and provided with a spring 0, which the cam in engagement with the ratchet.

Our device is applicable to both hand and foot brakes. It dispenses with all useless parts and may be easily and quickly put together.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,

1. In a wagon-brake, an extension lever comprising two sections held together by loops, of the upper section adapted to slide up and down, and means for securing the same in the desired position, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a wagon-brake, in combination with a frame, having a segmental plate provided with ratchet-teeth, of an extension-lever pivoted to the base of the said frame, the lower section of the said lever having a lug and ratchet-teeth upon its edge, of the upper section secured to the lower section and adapted to slide freely up and down, of a pawl upon the upper section adapted to engage the teeth upon the lower section, said pawl operated by a rod and hand-lever, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
