'lO ALL PERSONS T0 WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME;
Be it known that I, CALVIN BAKER, of Weymouth, in the county ol' Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Lifting-Pumps; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation..
Figure 2, a side view; lajnd Figure 3 a vertical section of a pump made in accordance with my invention, whichis intended to prevent sand or foreignv matters, drawn into the pump-barrel when in use, from choking its lower valve or impeding the action thereof.
In carrying out my invention I arrange the lower valve and its seat over a chamber opening into the lower end of the pump-barrel, and separate from the induction conduit leading to the valve. .Y
In the drawings. A denotes the pumpbarrel, B the piston or upper box, la the lifting-rod of the said box, and C the lever for operating the upper boit. The lower box or valve is shown at. E, -as arranged against a seat, F, placed against the side of the bore of the pump-barrel. Aininduetion pipe or passage, Gr, leads into the barrel through the valve-seat I". The barrel/l is arranged directly over and so as at its foot to openl into a close chamber, H, provided with a mouth, b, and a cap or cover, c, therefor, the said chamber being separate from the conduit G. Most., if not all, the sand and foreign matters liable to choke the lower vulve will, in pass-` ing into the pump-barrel, fall or be discharged into the chamber' II, from which, from time to time, they may be removed through its mouth. The pump at its lower part I usually provide with a flange, c, by the aid of which, and screws going through it, the pump may be fastened to the deck of a vessel, or to any object to which it may be desirable to aix it. The position of the valve and its seat are such (they being arranged so as to stand in or nearly in a vertical plane) that any sand or foreign matters in passing between them `will fall or be discharged from them by lthe action of gravity and the current of liquid that may be flowing into the pump-barrel.
My invention is particularly advantageous for the pumps-used for freeing the hulls of navigable vessels from water, it having been specially designed for such. It is useful, however, for various other lifting-pumps, particularly those employed for the raising of water more or less turbid, or containing earthy or vegetable matters liable to choke the lower box of the pump.
I claim the combination, as well as the arrangement of the chamber H, the pump-barrel A, the induction conduit G, the valve E, and the box B, the whole being to operate substantially as described.
CALVIN BAKER.
