PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUELTJ. BLIGII, or 'CUSTARDS, PENNSYLVANIA.
' sHAvme osvloz.
SBEQIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,065, dated March 97, 190i). Application flled'August 81, 1899. Serial lie-729,088. (Ho model.)
To all whom it may CON/08in; I
Be it known that I, SAMUEnLBLmH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Custards, in the county of- Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ShavingDevices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference b'eing had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The presentinvention has for its object to provide a device for shaving by abrasion, to take the place of the usual razor or other like cutting'implement; and it consists, substantially, in a roller having an abrading-surface and adapted for connecting with a suitable driving power, whereby the roller may have hereinafter described and claimed.
' Figure-1 of the drawings isa perspective view showing my improved shaving device in use; Fig. 2, a=perspectiveview of the shaving section through one end of the roller.
In'the accompanying. drawings, A repre'-. sents the.roller of wood or other suitable material and of any desirable diameter and length found best adapted to the purpose. The'periphery of the roller has an abradingsurface, preferably of emery, which surface strip of emery paper or clotli of suitable size, as-shown at B, may be secured around the roller. Where the roller is not composed of an abrad-ing material and the strip B of emery paper or cloth is used, the same is secured of in a longitudinal groove or-kerf formedin the periphery of the roller, as shown at a, and afterward drawing a cord or wire I; through this groove or kerf and between the edges of clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings.- This cord or wire will hold the emery cloth orpaper in or paper being removed when worn and 'replaced by a new strip, the cord or wire being pulled out from between the meeting edges of the emery 'paper or cloth when the latter 5c is to be removed.
The roller A has a central groove 0, over which passes a driving belt or cord d, which may in turn connect with any suitable driving-wheel operated by electricity, foot, or other power, as found most desirable.
In order to illustrate the application of the driving power to the belt or cord,I have shown in Fig, l of the drawings the usual drivingwheel 0 .of a sewing-machine, to which said belt or cord is connected, the power being applied by the usual foot-pedals of.the ma* chine by the user of the shaving device, a
guide-loop e, through which the belt or cord (1 passes, holding the latter in engagement with the driving-wheel O.
The roller A is journaled in a wire or other frame D, of any suitablelform and construe looped guide passes the driving belt or cord (1.
The looped guide F retains the belt or cord in engagement with the central groove of the roller and prevents any lateral displacement thereof. The abrading-snrface of the roller is held in contact with. the face of the user and the roller given a continuous rotary motion at a high rate of speed-and the roller movedov'erthe face as the beard'is worn away, the device to be used on a perfectlydry' face, no soap or water being used.
Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shaving device consisting of a roller having an abrading surface. and. a central guide-groove, a frame to which the roller is journaled,a guide-loop extending over and on'line with the-guide-groove, and a suitable handle connected to the frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. j
2. Ashavi-ng. device consisting of aroller having a. longitudinal groove or kerf adapted tion, said frame having a suitable handle E,
for the reception of the edges of a strip of paper .or cloth havingan abrading-surface to. holdand for the purpose specified.
the seine m place over the roller, said roller hereunto subscribed my namein the presence having a eentralgrbove, a suitable frame with of two witnesses. handle to whichthe roller is journaledgnd a guide-loop extending over the' roller and on 5 line with the central groove, substantially as Witnesses:
I O'rr A.'STOLZ, In testimony that I claim the above I have I WIN 8. ROSE.
' SAMUEL L. BLIGII.
