UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAHUELL IV. TAYLOR, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO B. H. MAOCLERNAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOISTENING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,143, dated March 13, 1900.
Application filed November 9 1899. Serial No. 786,438. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUELL W. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Moistening Device, of which the following is a specification.
Persons required to handle tickets and other papers find it necessary to moisten their fingers in order to insure accuracy; and it is one of the objects of my invention to provide a simple, efficient, and reliable device that may be attached to the clothing and used for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device as that it may be made a useful medium for advertising.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from'the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational View of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the moistener in application to the clothing and ready for use.
In the drawings, 1 is a casing, housing, or receptacle of any convenient size and shape. WVithin the housing there is placed an absorbent elastic pad or sponge 2.
3 is a perforated non-absorbent member which is movable in respect to the casing 1 and adapted to contact with the pad 2.
4. is a flanged ring detachably applied to the housing or casing, and it maybe taken off in order to remove the part 3 and wet the pad.
5 is a pin by means of which the device may be secured to the clothing. Instead of the pin another suitable fastening may be used, and I have indicated by dotted lines at 6 a button which can be inserted in a buttonhole. For advertising purposes the casing 1 may be made to resemble the article to be advertised-for example, a pickleand the member 3 may be also made to present an embossed picture, or it may be provided with a suitable inscription.
In use the absorbent pad may be moistened, and if the movable member 3 is pressed down by the finger fluid will be expressed from the pad and will reach the finger by way of the perforations in the member 3. It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but, I
Having thus described the nature and ob jects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A moistening device comprising a casing, housing or receptacle, an apertured non absorbent member movable in respect to the casing, an absorbent and elastic pad or sponge completely filling the space between the member and the bottom of the receptacle, and a fastening device for securing the casing to the clothes, substantially as described.
2. A moistening device comprising a casing, housing or receptacle, an apertured n0n= absorbent member movable in respect to the casing, an absorbent and elastic pad or sponge completely filling the space between the member and the bottom of the housing, and a flanged ring detachably fitted to the casing, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
SAMUELL \V. TAYLOR. In presence of- GRACE B. I-IURLBUT,
K. M. GILLIGAN.
