PATENT BRlDLE-BIT' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,945, dated March 6, 1900.

Application filed September 29, 1899. Serial No. 732,008. (Modeh) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ROBERT F. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fisk, in the county of Madison and State Of Alabama, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Bridle-Bits; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention has relation to bridle-bits.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production, and by means of which the driver will have complete control over the animal, thus preventing runaways and serious accidents.

To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View of my invention, showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the bit removed.

In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the inven tion.

1 denotes the mouthpiece of the bit; 2, the bit rings loosely connected with the ends thereof 5 3, levers loosely pivoted tosaid bitrings intermediate their ends; 4, the reinrings connected to the upper ends of the levers; 5, links connected to the lower ends of the levers, and 6 a ring connecting the links.

As shown in Fig. 1, when the bit is in place the levers and their connecting links and ring are arranged under the lower jaw of the animal, so that by drawing tightly upon the reins the lower ends of the levels-the links, and the ring will be forced upwardly against the lower jaw of the animal, thereby giving the driver complete control.

The bit-rings are provided with two shoulders 7, one to engage the end of the mouthpiece and the other to engage the lever. These are for the purpose of preventing the levers working forward and from under the lower jaw of the animal when the reins or lines are slackened.

If it be desired to hitch the horse to a post or other article, a hitch-strap may be con nected to the ring 6, and should the horse then attempt to pull away the lower ends of the levers would be drawn together and bury themselves in the horses lower jaw and so check him.

Should the hitch-strap be attached to the. line-rings or bit-rings and the horse attempt to get away, it will be impossible for him to Go draw the bit from. out of his mouth, as is so frequently the case, for the tighter he draws the tighter will be the pressure of the lever and its links 5 against his lower jaw.

It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Let ters Patent, is-

1. A bit comprising a mouthpiece, bit-rings loosely pivoted to the ends thereof, levers pivoted intermediate their ends to the bit rings and links, rings and links loosely pivoted respectively at the upper and lower ends of said levers, and a ring connecting the links at the lower ends of saidlevers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A bit comprisinga mouthpiece, bit-rings loosely pivoted to the ends thereof, levers pivoted intermediate their ends to the bit-rings, said bit-rings provided with upper and lower shoulders, the upper to engage the mouthpiece and the lower to engage the levers, rings and links loosely pivot-ed respectively at the upper and lower ends of said levers, and a ring connecting the links at the lower 0 ends of said levers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
