CAR-FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,596, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed July 5, 1899. Serial No. 722,884. (No model.)
To all whom it mcty concern.-
Be it known that I, DOMENICO GUARINO, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Fenders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had. to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improvement in car-fenders, and has for its object to provide a cheap and effective fender by the use of which a body upon being struck by a car is taken up in the fender and the car is prevented from passing over the body. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which-- Figure l is a general side view, and Fig. 2 is a top view omitting the lower fender. Fig. 3 is a view of my device in operation with a body held therein. The lower portion or part of my device directly beneath the car is not shown in this view.
My device is attached to the front endfof a street-car and in construction consists of a frame A, pivotally fastened to the under side of car A at a. The front end of the frame A is movably carried upon the rod A and has depending from it a secondary frame A ,which carries the arms a and a which in turn carry a frame G, which carries upon its forward end a scoop H, pivotally fastened to the front end of the frame G. The frame G is braced by the arm G, which is rigidly fastened to the frame A and is pivotally connected to the car at. g, concentric with the fastening a of the frame A. A guiding-arm g is pivotally fastened at g to the frame G and is employed to guide the fender around curves when the underground conduit system is used, the said guiding-arm g working in the slot of the conduit. A small roller h may be mounted upon the frame A and run in the slot and may also be employed as a guide for the fender in turning curves.
The scoop H extends the full width of the track and is provided with the arms h, pivotally fastened to the frame G and spaced about twelve inches apart.

The frame A is extended to form the side pieces or frame B, which is turn carries the frame 0, hinged thereto at c.
A frame D is pivotally fastened at d to the frame 0 and has the upright arms 01, extending upwardly from it, and pivotally fastened to the said upright arms d at d are the frames E and E, An arm F, formed with a tooth f, is pivotally fastened to the frame or side piece B and is weighted at its lower end f. The tooth f is adapted to engage and hold in position the frame D.
Pivotally fastened to the frame E is an arm 6, which is adapted to engage the ratchet teeth e uponthe frame E when the frameE has swung around toitslowest position, thereby locking the said frame.
The device operates as follows: When the car is in motion and a person is standing in the path of the car, the lower portion 6 of the frame E will strike the body and the impact will force back the said frame E This frame revolves about d and moves the upper frame E forward by means of the lug e until it'falls forward and downward, catching the body, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The frame E is provided with a suitable netting about half the distance to the joint d The impact of the body against the fender acts to throw or swing the frames E and E back until they strike the arm F, which, being pivoted, swings back until the tooth fdisengages the frame D, thereby allowing it to drop and swing about on 6 The arm e engaging in the ratchet-pieces 6 acts to lock the frames E and E, thereby securely holding the body within the fender. The'lower portion of the fender embodying the scoop acts in case the body is not caught by the larger fender and falls to the track, whereupon the scoop H will strike it, and the impact will cause the scoop H to be forced back and down and scoop up the body, which will slide under the arms h and be held upon the scoop by the same. The dotted lines in Fig. 1 show the position of the scoop when forced back by impact of the body.
The framework of the fender is so constructed as to allow its being folded back against the dashboard of the car, thereby albring the car toa stop. When the scoop and 7 frame are thrown backward, the rod or arm g acts to cut off the electric current, thereby preventing the motors of the car from operating.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a fender for streetcars, of collapsible frames, a frame beneath the car and pivotally connected to the car, said frame carrying the collapsible frames, a movable frame fastened to the lower portion of the frame under the car, a scoop carried upon the movable frame, a guiding-roller for guiding the fender around curves, and lugs located upon the surface of the ground and adapted to bring the car to a standstill instantly when the scoop is in lowered position, substantially as described.
