SILAS RAYMOND, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
LAM P-CHlMNE Y HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 644,185, dated February 27, 1900.
Application filed July 31, 1899. Serial No. 725,582. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAS H. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in chimney-holders for lamps; and its object is to provide a chimney-holder that will engage and securely hold either a chimney having a plain cylindrical base or a chimney having an enlargement around the lower end of the base and to provide the same with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My invention consists, essentially, in providing upwardly-proj ectin g spring-clips of peculiar shape adapted to engage the upwardly and inwardly inclined surface of the enlargement around the base of the chimney, and thus press the chimney down upon the bed of the burner, said clips being thence extended upward in parallel planes and engaging the vertical sides of the chimney to prevent tipping of the same sidewise, said upward extensions being also adapted to engage the sides of a chimney having a plain cylindrical base and effectually hold the same, as will hereinafter more fully appear in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-= Figure 1 is a detail in vertical section, showing the preferred form of chimney having an enlarged base; Fig. 2, a detail of a burner and the base of a chimney of like form with the bottom of the latter passing the inwardlyprojecting angles of the spring-clips, and Fig. 3 a complete burner and a chimney of like construction in place thereon.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents a glass lamp -chi1nney provided with an enlarged base consisting of a truncated conical portion B, presenting an upwardly and inwardly inclined surface to engage the inwardly-projecting anglesE of the clips and having a cylindrical portion A above the conical portion B to engage the parallel vertical portions F of said clips.
cles outward and upward and having in-- wardly-projecting angles E, adapted to slidably engage the upwardly and inwardly in clined surface of the truncated conical base B of the chimney. Said clips are also extended vertically in parallel planes along the surface of the cylindrical portion A of the chimney, as at F, and thence outwardly and upwardly at any convenient inclination to guide the chimney to place between said clips, as at G.
From the foregoing the operation of my dcvice will be readily understood. The s'emi= circular parts D of the clips serve as springs to press the angles E against the upwardly and inwardly inclined surface of the truncated conical base B. These angles also tend to slide upward on the same, and thus constantly and yieldingly press the chimney down on the bed-plate of the burner and ef= fectually prevent its working up and allow ing air to pass between its lower end and the bed-plate, as is frequently the case in lamps as heretofore constructed. The upward parallel extensions F serve to support the chimney in vertical position, and thus prevent its tipping laterally and overcoming the described downward pressure atone side. Said upward extensions F also serve as lovers to spring the clips apart and to guide the chimney to place on the burner. Said upward parallel extensions also serve to engage the parallel vertical sides of a chimney having a plain cylindrical base and hold the same when such is used. Said clips being flexible throughout they will conform to any slight variation in diameter of such chimneys and engage the same throughout the entire length of the portions F, which will thus more effectually hold the chimney vertical than any clips engaging at certain points only.
I thus secure a satisfactory holder for a chimney having a plain cylindrical base and at the same time provide a very superior holder for the form of chimney shown, which latter construction of chimney I prefer to use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a chimney having a truncated conical base and a cylindrical portion above said base, a burner, flexible clips attached to the burner and extending in semicircular form radially outward and upward and having inwardly-projecting angles slidably engaging and pressing downward upon the upwardly and inwardly inclined surface of the truncated conical base of said chimney I 5 and parallel vertical portions engaging and pressing inward upon the cylindrical portion of the same throughout their entire lengths, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 20 in presence of two witnesses.
SILAS H. RAYMOND.
