BIT-HOLDER FOR SHAPING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,950, dated February 20, 1900.
Application filed March 28, 1899. Serial No. 710,754. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LAWSON S. Daron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bit-Holders for Shaping-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to bit-holders for shaping-machines; and the object is to provide a device for this purpose which will be simple in construction, cheap tomanufacture, and particularly adapted for use on all classes and sizesof such machines.
I will now describe my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
A represents the hub, into which are secured adjustable bushings a and a, the purpose of which will appear hereinafter. Cast integral with the hub A and periphery of the device are radially-projecting arms Z) and Z), which are provided in their under sides with grooves or recesses c and c. The purpose of these grooves or recesses is for receiving bits, which are rigidly held in position in said grooves or recesses by set-screws e.
The adjustable bushings a and a form the essential feature of my invention, as by their employment the device can be fitted to all different sizes of shafts of shaping-machines by simply inserting bushings corresponding to the size of shaft to be fitted, whereas previous to the production of my invention it was necessary to have'different sizes of bitholders in order to fit the different sizes of shafts.
If a shaft is found to be too small to fit the hole in the bushings, another set of bushings is substituted having a smaller hole or opening.
The bushings are preferably threaded for holding them in their normal position within the hub, although this is not necessary, as the nuts (not shown) which are used for securing the holder to the shaft would prevent the bushings from becoming disengaged when in use.
Having described my invention, what I claim is A bit-holder for shaping-machines comprising in its construction the interior-ly-screw- 6o threaded hub A adapted to receive bushings a, a, the annular rim, and the arms I) and b formed integral with said hub and rim and provided in their outer ends with recesses c, c to receive the cutters, combined with the set-screws 6 operating through said arms to engage the cutters and hold the same in the grooves of the arms, as and for the purpose specified.
