ROLLER-BEARING FOR WAGQN THIMBLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,853, dated February 20, 1960.

To all whom it may cor warn.-
Be it known that I, JAMES MARION WHISE- NANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olay, in the county of White and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Roller-Bearing for Wagon-Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to roller-bearings in general, and more particularly to that class employed in connection with vehicle-wheels; and it has for its object to provide a simple and cheap construction for employment upon wagon or carriage Wheels and in which the parts may be readily assembled and disassembled for interchange of parts and for renewal of worn or injured portions.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in both views, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a portion of a vehicle-axle constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the location and arrangement of the roller-bearings. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking to the right.
Referring now to the drawings, 5 represents a skein adapted for attachment to the end of an axletree or axle, and the outer end of which is substantially cylindrical. At the rear end of this cylindrical portion is formed an annular flange 6, the front face 7 of which lies at right angles to the periphery of the skein. A suitable distance from the face of the flange 6 is a second flange 8, having a lesser height, and the face of which adjacent the face 7 is parallel therewith, the outer surface of the flange being slanted, as shown at 9, to the surface of theskein proper. A third flange 10 is formed upon the skein and is similar to the flange 8 in every respect; but its outwardly-extending face is at its side in the di- I the outer end of the skein forms two races 11 and 12, the cooperating races being formed by the inner surface of the boxing or bushing 14 within the hub 15 of the wheel. This boxing flts snugly against the outer face 7 of the flange 6 and extends throughout the length of the major portion of the skein and is held against longitudinal displacement by means of a nut 16 engaging the threads of a central and longitudinal extension of the skein 17. Between the cooperating races are disposed rollers 18 and 19, the ends of which are curvilinear, each end of each roller having a single point bearing against the adjacent surface, as shown in Fig. 1.
The nut 16 not only prevents longitudinal movement of the boxing or bushing 14 and therewith the hub 15, but also forms an end bearing for the rollers 19. The nut 16 has, furthermore, openings 20 for the reception of the pins of a spanner, by means of which the nut may be placed or displaced.
In order to supply a lubricant to the rollers, perforations 22 are formed through the hub and boxing, as shown.
With the above construction it will be seen that a roller-bearing is provided between the flange adjacent the first-named flange and having a face lying parallel with the face of v the first flange, there being a cylindrical race between the flanges, a series of rollers in the race and adapted for engagement at their ends with the flanges, an additional flange ad- 0 jacent the outer end of the skein and having a face lying at right angles to the axis of the skein, a nut disposed upon the reduced portion of the skein, and extending radially beyond the last-named flange, there being a race between the last-named flange and the nut,
