TO .ALL INI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Be it known that-I, PARLi- HOWE, of' Stati'ordville,.iu the county of Tolland, and State of Connecticut, 'have invented a new and improved Hand-Spring for Machinery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a hand-spring for the starting and stopping-of looms and other machines, which hand-spring is of' such a construction and arrangement that itv can be operated with the utmost facility, ease, and readiness, will be obvious from the following detail description of the same, reference being had to the aceolnpanying plate ot' drawings, in which-- Figure l is a front view of the hand-spring showing a portion of one ot' the end fra-mes Vof the loom; and

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. p Y
A, in the dra-wings, represents the lever or arm of the hand-spring7 which lever, at its lower end, is hung upon a fulcrnm at B, between the lugs C ot' the end frame D, and at its upper is provided with a handle, for convenience in operating it, this lever or arm being connected with the driving parts of the loom in the ordinary manner, so that it will serve to start or stop the same according as it is moved either one way or the other. To this lever or arm A, near its lower end, is hung, through a wire loop, F, the loose end 'of :L bent spring, G, that, at its other end, is fixed to the end frame D, toward the upper odge of the same, this spring being provided with a clasp, H, between its loose and fixed ends, that, having a thumb-nut I screwed upon its end passed through the end frame D, allows the tension of the said spring to beregula-ted at pleasure. The upper portion Vof the hand-leverA moves and plays in and between the sides of a horizontal guide-arm' or bar, J, fixed to the frame D, which 'a-rln J, at or near its outer end, is notched, so as to allow the arm, when swung or moved out to that point, to fall into it and becoming thus there locked and held, as it were, the action of `the bent spring being not only to throw the lever-arm A into such notch, but also. when disengaged therefrom, to draw ittowarcl the other end of the guide-arm or bar J. i
I claim as new, and' desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'lhe handspring, constructed, arranged, and applied substantially as and for the purpose described.
,Y PARLEY HOWE.
