TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. CARPENTER, of Middletown, Orange county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,-clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in theart to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This improvement relates to a method of utilizing heat by discharging a current of heated air either into the room where the stove is situated or into a room above; and the invention consists in arranging pipes or tubes within the furnace of the stove, which pipes have communication with the air outside of the stove, and through which a current of air constantly passes from the lower to the upper portion and is discharged in a highly heated state, as will be herein more perfectly described. I
Figure 1 represents a-sectional elevation ofa stove with my improvement attached, it being throughthe line x a: of fig. 2; and 1 Figure 2 is a. horizontal section of fig. 1, through the line g y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the stove; B is the ash-pit of the stove; and C is the hearth. My invention isconfined to the pipe marked D, which is in a vertical position, as represented in the drawing, and to the horizontal pipe .which is marked E. F represents the grate of thc stove furnace, upon which E rests. The ends of this pipe E pass through the sides Of the stove, thus giving a free entrance to the air from the lower portion of the room. The upright pipe D is attached to E in the centre of the furnace, or it may be attached to any other portion, as at one end of the pipe E, and the horizontal pipe may be closed at one end or pass through the stove onlynt one end if it is desired to apply the device in that-way; G re-presents the store door. H is the stove pipe or smoke-flue. J is a pipe which connects in y hot-nir pipe with the store pipe and chimney. This pipe J is used only when it 'is desired to carry off a portion of the heated airnp the chimney. This is regulated by a damper which is marked 2'. K is another damper, which closes the hot-air pipe D when it is desired to stop ih'c upward draught. L is a ring or band which slides around the pipe D to open or close an aperture which is made through the pipe. r
When it is desired to discharge the heated air into the room where the stovcis situated, both the upper dampers are closed and the aperture at L is opened, and when it is desired to discharge the current of heated air into a chamber or room above, the aperture at L is closed and the damper K is opened.
By this arrangement a current of air froni the lower or colder portion of the room passes into the pipes in the store, where it is highly heated and discharged, as already described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The horizontal pipe E, resting upon the grate, its ends passing through the sides of the stove, and supporting the vertical pipe D centrally in the furnace, said pipes 1) provided with the adjustable ring L, and connected to the stove pipe H, when all are constructed and arranged as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 19th day of January, 1867.
