TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONC'ERN:
Be' it known that I, CHARLES T. SMITH, of Utica, Oneida county, New York, have invented a nenr and useful Improvement in Metallic Robbins.;y and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art top make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in the construction of metallic bobbins, patented me October I6, 1356. The present invention consists in the means employed for securing the'wooden heads or anges on the metallic tubes, as hereinafter fully shown and described. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure I is a longitudinal central section of a metallic Warp bobbin, having the head or flange secured upon its tube according to my invention.
Figure 2, an external view of a metallic twist bobbin, having the head or flange secured upon its tube in the same Way. i i
Figure 3, an external view of a shuttle bobbin, having the head or iiange secured upon its tube in the same way.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The tubes a are, as hitherto, constructed of zinc or other non-corrosive*metal` Zincl would probably be the cheapest and preferable material, although brass would answer a good purpose. The tubes are draivn down to the proper dimensions, and the interior cf the upper ends of the tubes a are filled with solder, e, or other suitable material, (see g. 1,) so that the interior' of the orifices of the tubes may be contracted'tojsuit the upper part of the spindle on which the bobbin is tted While beingiilled. In lieu of this, however, the tubes may be drawn with solid heads or tips, and the latter drilled out to suit the diameter of the ends of the spindle. These features, however, are shown and described in the Letters Patent previously granted to me, and therefore do not require a more minute description.
The Wooden heads or flanges b are fitted ori-the tubes a, and rmly secured thereon by having` the tubes a drawn so as to form a shoulder, '0, the metal being compressed or forced down so as to forni a short concave in athe exterior of the metal, the metal displaced `forming the shoulder. The upper surfaces of the'heads or flanges b abut against the shoulders c,and thelower ends of the tubes a project a trifle below the under surfaces of the heads or flanges, and arc turned over within a concave, d, in the under surfaces of the heads or flanges, as shown clearly in iig. I. If necessary or desired the ends of the tubes L may be slotted longitudinally a short distance, and the portions formed by the slots turned over within the concave. By this simple means the heads or langes will be firmly secured on the tubes.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The securing of the 'woodenl heads or flanges b on the non-corrosive metal tubes a, of bobbins, by'drawing up a shoulder, c, on the tubes, for the upper surfaces of the heads cr anges b to abut against, and turning up the ends of the tubes a, within a. concave, d, substantially-as shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 2d day oi' February, 1867.
CHARLES T. SMITH.
