Bc it known that I, JOSEPH MERWXN, oi" the city, county, and Stute of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buitondlloles for Collars, oi" which the following is n. full, Clear, n-nd exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing, forming` part of this specification, :rnd which represents a side or face View of n collar with my improvement applied thereto.

The object of my invention, which is applicable to collars made of various materials, including paper or peper cloth, is to enable the collar, if not exactly oi the required size, to adjust itself` to the neck, and whereby, also, either end of the button-hole is or may he allowed to completely encircle the shank of the butter, and the mein or intermediate portionof the button-hole he of n. closed character, with cv'eiy.t`ncility, however, for thc passage of the hutten through it without tearing the edges, thereby not only producing ncetncss of Jrit or appearance but a. steady hold of the huttoning portion of the coller to its place on or around the hut-ton, with but n small or no liability of the hutton-hole to burst or tear nt either ol' its ends.

.Having stated the object or objects of my invention, it may be here remarked that it consists in making ech or either of the several button-holes in a. cellar 'of two circular oreqnivalently shaped holes united hy a, slit, the edges of which moet, or nenrly so, before and afterthe button is inserted. Such being the peculiar character oi' my invention, it will be seen that' it materially differs from that description of button-hole which is formed by a 'single circula-r hole at the one extremity of e slit, which construction gives no facility for the collar to adjust itself to n. similar union of it, nt either or both ends of the button-hole, with 'the slnmk of the hut-ton, and, moreover, affords less convenience for entering the button, with an increased liability of the huttonhole bursting or tearing at its end in spreading it to overlap or receive the button. Equally dissimilar, toc, is my invention from that form of button-hole proposed for paper collars, in which n piece of wooden fnhric is inserted between two thicknesses of paper that have an elliptic-formed button-hole in them, while the woven fabric has merely nslit whichdoes not encircle the shank of thc button so as to hold the collar against moving or getting loose, and, fis' applied to pnper collars, increases cost byrcndering necessary different materials nud greater labor in forming,` the huttonhole portion of the collar, while my invention has but little in common with what may be termed the open-shaped button-holes, including that in which n recess is made in the one side of the hutton-hole to receive the shank of the blitton, whilst buttoning` or unbuttoning, to prevent tearing of tho button-hole nt its ends.

In further explanation of my improvement, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, in which- A represents n. collar supposed to be made of' peper, lend of other than the turn-over form, to which, however, my invention is equally applicable, as it is also, as previously observed, to linen or other collars. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The construction in collars of n button-hole formed by holes of circular shape, or therenhouts, at opposite ends of n connecting-culto): slit, thc edges of which constitute flaps or wings`substantially as specified.
