To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. RUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Creepers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide an ice-creeper which will be simple of construction, cheap of manufacture, and of easy op eration; and with this end in View I have devised an article of this nature which is described in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a View showing the creeper in place on the sole of a shoe and Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views.

In the manufacture of my in ventionI construct an operating-lever a, havinga circular end I), upon one face of which are mounted studs 0, arranged longitudinally of the lever. The circular end of the operating-lever is enlarged to form a broad bearing against the shoe-sole when the device is in place. This will make it more comfortable for the wearer, particularly when the sole of the shoe has become worn, as the weight of the wearer will bear heavily at this point. I also provide two jaws d and 6, each of which has a plane and an upturned end g, which said upturned points are provided with points h, formed integral therewith and turned in the direction of the plane end. Upon the under side of each jaw and adjacent the upturned ends are points i, which are preferably stamped from the same material as the jaws and turned downwardly therefrom. Adjacent the points 2' are perforations t", the use of which will be hereinafter described. A longitudinal slot j is formed in each jaw, near its plane end, each of which is provided with recesses 70, extending into one of its sides and obliquely therefrom. The jaws d and c are pivotally and slidably secured to the circular end of the lever on by the slots j and the studs 0, each of which is passed through one of the slots and is then headed over or is upset to prevent its Withdrawal.

Pivoted to the operating-lever at its free end is a locking-lever Z, upon the outer edge of which are points in and m, which are bent back upon themselves into the plane of the lever, the end of which said lever is bent downwardly away from the points 'm and m to form a thumb-piece it.

When applying my ice-creeper to a shoe, each of the jaws is adjusted upon the operating-lever a in such a manner as to allow each of the lugs c to fall into a corresponding recess at the edges of the slots, and when this is done the sole of the shoe is placed upon the creeper between the ends g of the jaws, whereupon the operating-lever is rocked to one side, which brings the lugs c longitudinally of the shoe, drawing the jaws together. The locking-lever Z is then secured to the edge of the sole at the raised portion between the heel and the ball by means of the point 'm at the end opposite the thumb-piece, and with this point m as the fulcrum the locking-lever is rocked by means of the thumb-piece until the point on is beyond the shoe-sole, when it is secured thereto at its edge, as is the point 012. The ice-creeper is now removably secured in place and is ready for use, and when the point '5 has become worn sufficiently to justify small studs 0 may be screwed or otherwise secured into the perforations i, as shown in dotted line in Fig. 2.

It will be understood that I may make my invention of any suitable material and that I may make slight alterations in its construction without departing materially from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An ice-creeper comprising an operating lever, clamping-jaws slidably and adj ustably connected with the lever adjacent one end, a locking-lever pivoted to the operating-lever, hooks formed upon one edge of the lockinglever at each side of the pivot, and a thumbpiece adjacent one of said hooks to operate the locking-lever.

2. An ice-creeper comprising an operating lever, lugs formed upon said lever at one of its ends, clamping-jaws adjustably secured upon the lugs, a locking-lever pivoted to the operating-lever at a point intermediate the ends of the former, an upwardly and inwardly turned hook formed upon one end of the looking-lever, the opposite end of said lever being turned downwardly to form a thumb-piece and an upwardly and inwardly turned hook formed upon the locking-lever between the thumb-piece and the pivot.

3. An ice-creeper comprising an operatinglever, lugs mounted upon the lever at an end thereof, jaws slidaoly secured upon the lugs, longitudinal slots in the jaws forming guideways for the lugs, recesses in the sides of the slots for retaining the jaws in an adjusted position, projections at the outermost ends of the jaws and turned inwardly to lie parallel with the jaws, points upon a face of the jaws,
