SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 637,944, dated November 28, 1899.
Application filed December 15, 1896. Renewed February 4, 1899. Serial No. 704,545. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H.QUIGLEY,of Nobob, county of Barren, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churn-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
The object of my invention is to produce improvements in mechanism for operating churns that comprehend mechanism for regulating the movement of the dasher-rod and for taking up wear which may occur between it and its bearings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a front View of my churn. Fig. II is a side elevation of the same. Fig. III is a top plan view of the same. Fig. IV is a view of the lower dasher-bearing cross-piece detached.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates the front uprights of my frame, which are vertical, and 2 the rear uprights, which are slightly inclined toward the uprights 1 at their upper ends. The several uprights are united by suitable cross-pieces, so located and united to the uprights as to incorporate them into a strong rigid frame.
4 indicates a pair of cross-pieces, which are secured to the front uprights 1 and are provided with boxes 5, within which Works the shaft 6 of a gear-wheel 7. The shaft 6 is provided with a crank 8 for operating it, and the gear-wheel 7 meshes with a pinion 9, suitably mounted on a shaft 10, carried in boxes 11 upon cross-pieces 12. Upon its outer end the shaft 10 is preferably provided with a flywheel 13, and between the cross-pieces 12 it is bent to form a crank 14.
While I have described a preferred assemblage of gears constituting the driving mechanism, such mechanism may consist, essentially, of means for operating the crank of the shaft 10, to which at one end is secured a pitman 16, that is pivoted at its other end, as indicated at 17, to a dasher-rod 18. The dasher-rod is designed to be reciprocated by means of the motion of the pitman 16, im-

The ways 19 and 20 are defined in each of the bearing-pieces,re spectively,by a sliding block 25,haviugone end beveled as indicated at 26,that constitutes one side of the way within which the dasher-rod reciprocates. Each of the blocks is provided with an elongated slot 27, which receives a bolt 28, that being screw-threaded, preferably at both ends, passes also through the bearing pieces and is provided at each end with a wing-nut 28, by means of which the block when adjusted properly against the dasherrod may be secured.
By means of the blocks the d'asher-rod may be closely confined within its way and all wear may be compensated for. Moreover, the direction of the movement of the dasher-rod may be regulated thereby. For the latter purpose I may sometimes employ an adjust able block upon the end ofeach of the bearing-pieces, the duplication of the same, with its adjustment mechanism, being indicated in the drawings in dotted lines.
Upon the end of the dasher-rod I prefer to provide a cleft 29, within which fits the tenon 30 of the dasher proper, the parts being separately united, as by a pin 31.
What I claim is 1. In a churn-operating mechanism, the combination with a frame and driving mechanism, of a pitman operatively connected with the driving mechanism, a dasher-rod pivotally connected at its upper end to the pitman, transverse bearing-pieces upon the frame against which one face of the dasherrod Works, adjustable blocks supported upon the said bearing-pieces, and movable toward and from the dasher-rod, the said bearingpieces and adjustable blocks engaging with the dasher-rod on three sides or faces, and constituting ways in which it moves, and
