UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMELIA LINDEBERG, OF BLUFFTON, MINNESOTA.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 637,626, dated November 21, 1899. Application filed August 11, 1897. Serial No. 647,792. (No modeL) T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMELI-A LINDEBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluffton township, in the county of Otter Tail and State of Minnesota, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in slings for fire-escapes and the like, the same consisting in the assemblage of a breeching or breeches, a web portion extending upwardly from the breeches, a reinforced bandsection attached to the upper end of the web portion, suspendingstraps connected with the reinforced band, a ring connecting the upper ends of the suspending-straps, and a body-strap detachably connected with the band portion.
The drawing is a perspective showing my improved sling as connected with a hoisting apparatus adapted for use as a fire-escape.
l is a Windlass with suitable connections adapting it for attachment to the wall of a room opposite a window and is intended to represent anyconventional form of fire-escape carrying a Windlass-rope 20.
My improved sling consists of a breeching or breeches 34, having leg portions 40 and a web portion 41, extending upward from the main portions, the upper end of the web portion having a reinforced band-section 32. Connected with the band-section 32 are supporting-straps 31, which are themselves connected at the upper end by means of a ring 30, adapted for connection with the hoistingrope 20 of the Windlass. To the opposite ends of the band-section 32 are attached eyes or staples 35, by which rings or eyes 36 are attached to the sling. Connected with these rings 36 is a body-strap 37, coupled at one end with one of the rings by means of a buckle 38 and at the other detachably connected with the other ring by means of a snap-hook 39. The web portion is of such length as to bring the band-section and body-strap around the chest beneath the arms of the user, so as to form a support at this point to prevent falling and in case of Weak or helpless persons to sustain them in an upright position. In order to adapt the sling to persons of considerably-varying sizes, the breeches are provided with an elastic take-up 4:2. In use the operator or user draws the breeches over his legs and brings the body-strap around the chest under the arms and hooks it into one of the eyes or rings 36.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A sling or suspending device for fire-escapes consisting of breeches of heavy fabric, a web portion extending upwardly from the breeches, a reinforced band-section secured to the upper edge of the web portion, rings in the extremities of the reinforced band, a strap connected at one end with one of the rings, a snap-catch attached to the free end of the strap for connection with the other ring, the strap being arranged in a zone to embrace the body and chest beneath the arms, suspending-straps attached to the reinforced band-section, and a ring connecting the upper ends of the suspending-straps, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMELIA LINDEBERG.
