PATENT EUGENE CROSS, OF GRIFFITH, MISSISSIPPI.
INVOICE-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,237, dated October 17, 1899.
Application filed March 2, 1899.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE (Ross, of Griffith, in the county of Clay and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Invoice-File, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in files for invoices, bills, letters, and the like; and the object is to provide a file of simple and comparatively inexpensive construction in which papers or documents may be quickly and easily filed.
I will describe an in voice-file embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a file embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig 3. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of a pressure-strip employed, and Fig. 5 shows one end of a pressure-spring employed.
The file comprises two covers 1 2, of any suitable material having the required stiffness. These covers are connected together by a back strip 3 of duck, leather, or other suitable material, and this back strip may be stiffened by a strip 4 of cardboard.
Secured to the back is a metal boxing consisting of a back piece 5, a bottom piece 6, which extends at right angles to the back 5 and is secured to the cover 1, a lid 7, having hinged connection with the back 5 and secured to the cover 2, and end pieces 8. v
Extending upward in the boxing and through the bottom strip 6 are pins 9, which pins are here shown as connected in pairs by a cross-piece 10. This cross-piece 10 will be placed between the cover 1 and the bottom piece 6 of the boxing, and therefore the pins will be held rigidly in their proper position.
Movable relatively to the pins 9 is a pressure-strip 11, having holes through which the pins 9 pass. This pressure-strip is held yieldingly against the papers m that may be placed in the file by means of a spring 12, engaging therewith. The presssure-strip 11 may be made of wood, and at its ends it has openings 13. Over these openings are placed lonserial No. 707,474. N m del.)
gitudinally-slotted plates 14.,through the slots of which shank portions 15 of the spring 12 extend. The spring has lateral projections 16, which will engage against the under side of the plates 14, and it also has lateral projections 17, which will engage against the upper side of said plates. By this construction the ends of the spring may move longitudinally of the pressure-strip'll, as said spring is expanded by the filling of the invoice-file; but the spring will be prevented from detaching itself from the pressure-strip.
At the center of the spring and at its rear side is a curved lug 18, designed to engage underneath a curved lug 19, extended forward from the back piece 5 of the boxing. In operation when it is desired to place invoices or the like in the file the spring and pressure-strip are to be removed. This may be done by disengaging the lug 18 from the lug 19 and lifting the parts free from the pins 9. The openings in the strip 11 through which the pins pass are sufficiently large to allow the strip 11 to be slightly tilted, so that the lug 18 may be moved forward of the lug 19 when the said spring and strip are to be removed. After placing the papers on the pins, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the pressure-strip and spring are of course to be replaced.
In addition to the parts described I may provide an ordinary index and in addition an invoice-register properly ruled and perforated, so as to be torn oif and filed with a definite number of invoices, and numbered to also serve as pages. V.
This file may be made in various sizes to suit all requirements.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A file, comprising covers, a metal box ing arranged therein and having a swinging lid secured to one of the covers, pins extended from the bottom piece of the boxing, a pressure-strip having openings through which the pins pass, and a pressure-spring connected to the pressure-strip and having removable connection with the back piece of the boxing, substantially as specified.
2. A file, comprising covers connected together by a back piece, a boxing secured to ing arranged therein, pins arranged in the boxing, a pressure-strip movable longitudinally of the pins, slotted plates attached to said strip, a spring having lateral projections to engage against the top of the plates and lateral projections to engage against the under sides of the plates, a curved lug at the center of said spring, and a curved lug extended from the back of the boxing to engage over the first-named lug, substantially 20 as specified.
. EUGENE GROSS.
