"To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC H. WISE, of Huntsville, in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Gar-Replacer, of which the follow-' ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for replacing cars and similar wheeled vehicles upon a track, and comprises the novel features hereinafter more fully deplaced when in use. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of a car, showing my device in place ready for use. Fig. 4c is a side elevation of my device, showing an axle in section on the line 4 din Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a modified formof construction, and Fig. 6 is a detail view showing more clearly the yoke or block which is inserted in the notch in one of 1the segment-disks and which receives the ax e.
My device comprises, essentially, pairs of segment-disks I and O, which are connected with each other by means of shafts E or by any other suitable connection, one of the disks having teeth formed in its periphery and adapted to engage with a toothed rib or rack B, which projects slightly from the surface of a base A. 1
Each segment disk O is provided'with a notch F, located at one end of the segmental portion and of sufficient size to receive therein the axle of the car. This notch may have a block or yoke Gr placed therein and having an opening of such size as to engage the caraxle. This construction .while not strictly essential is desirable for some reasons. It is preferred thatt inner surface of the notch F should be rounded or beveled, as clearlyshown in Fig. 6, so .that the axle or the yoke G, when such a yoke is used, may rock slightly upon these surfaces to accommodate the angular positions of the axle H.
The base upon which the segmentdisks are placed consists of a plate A, which, as herein Fig. 2 is a plan of the base upon which the device is Application filed February Q1899. Serial No. 704,779. (No model.)
shown, is of semicircular outline and has the rib B projecting above its upper surface and toothed to correspond with the teeth upon the periphery of the segment 0. It is also provided upon its under surfacewith teeth or projections a, adapted to engage the side edges of the railroad-ties T, and thus prevent the base from sliding upon said ties. Itis preferred that the device be used in duplicate, audit is herein so shown, two bases A and the corresponding segments being used, the two being made right and left, so as to fit together.
The segment I is without any teeth upon its periphery and also without the notch F, which engages the axle. The purpose of this segment is to prevent the segment 0 from rocking sidewise under the influence of either the weight of the car or the pull of the engine when the car is being raised -to its. properplace. One edge of this segment projects 7 under the axle H, so as to prevent the segment I from rising under the influence of a side strain, while its bearing upon the base A will prevent the segment from being rocked in the opposite direction.
The device is placed upon the ties beneath the axle of the car and may be and preferably is placed with the ribs 13 extending at such an angle to the rails as to carry the car toward the rails J at the same time that it is lifted. It is only necessary to raise the car a sufficient distance to cause the flanges of the wheels K to clear the rails J.
- It is obvious that with the device placed in the position shown in Fig. 1 and the car pullediu the direction indicated by the arrow the car-axle will be lifted as the segments roll upon the base. The angular position of thedevice will determine the amount of side 'movement given to the car by this action.
Thecar by this means may be raised and transferred sidewise as many times as necessary to get it upon the track.
The device is comparatively simple, weighs but little, and may be placed in position by two men. When in position, it is a simple matter, by attaching the engine to the car,
to lift the car and put it in place on the track.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A car-rcpiacer, comprising a base havin a toothed rib or rack, and a segment-disk having teeth upon its periphery adapted to engage with the rack-teeth, and a notch at one edge of the segment-disk adapted to receive the car-axle.
2. A car-repiacer having a base, a toothed rib or rack on the base, and a segment-disk having teeth upon its periphery, flanges at each side of the teeth adapted to engage and embrace the rack-teeth, and a notch at one edge of the segment-disk, adapted to receive the car-ax1e.
3. A car-repiacer, comprising a base having a toothed rib or rack, a toothed segment-disk engaging the rack and having a notch at one edge adapted to receive the car-axle, the sides of said notch'being beveled or rounded, and a yoke fitting Within said notch and receiving the car-axle.
4. A car-replacer, comprising abase having a toothed rib or rack, a toothed segment-disk engaging the rack and having a notch at one edge adapted to receive the car-axle, and a similarly-curved segment-disk secured to the toothed segment by a shaft or axle, and adapted to bear upon the base.
A car-replacer, comprising a base having a toothed rib or rack, a toothed segment-disk having flanges at each side of the teeth and engaging the rack, a notch at one edge of the segment-disk, adapted to receive the car-axle, and a similarly-curved segment-disk secured to the toothed segment and adapted to bear upon the base.
