'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. MADDEN, of Cleveland, inthe county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Bread Cutters, &c. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description thereof. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in wliich- Figure 1 is a side view of the cutter.
Figure 2 is a. top view.
Figure 3 is an end view. I
Like letters refer to like parts inthe dilferent views.l
A represents the hed of the cutter, which may or may `not be an inclined plane. To the sides of this hed are fastened the cleats a a', thus forming a way, A', through'irhich the slide B moves. 'CC are knives placed in an angular position, as shown in iig. 1', Cbeing secured to the piece D, which projects from the top of the side piece E, and C' secured to the cleat a directly underneath, thus bringing the two knives in the same vertical line. It will be seen that the knife Cl is longer than the knife C. This is for a purpose hereafter shown. F is n guard attached to the hund piece 6 for keeping the fingers from the knives when operating.
This cutter is designed for cutting bread, and can also be used for vegetables, and various other articles.
The operation is as follows: The loaf` or other article is placed on the slide B against the hand piece and the end desired to be cut placed against the side piece The slide is then pushed along the wayund the loaf against the knives, which, one being longer than the other, leaves no space uncut. The slide is then brought back, and the loaf, pushed along against the side piece E, is again forced against the knives, thus neatly and easily doing the work. The knives, if desired, may' also he secured to the slide und moved with it, while the article to be sliced' remains stationary, except to hel pus-hed up to the knives to 'be cut o'. The machine, as herein described, may be operated and the article to be eut held with the same hand and at the same time.
What I claim as my improvement, and desirerto secure by Letters Patent, is- The slide B, hand piece b, and guard F, Yin combination with the way A', knives C C, and side piece E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. i I
JOHN MADDEN.
