Beit known that I, JOSEPH F. BATcHnLoR, ot' New York, (Brooklym) State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful lmprovement in Valve-.actuating Devices, of. which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to those means for controlling the flow of steam or other liuid which embrace in combination with a valve-head an actuating-piston.
The invention includes, associated with the foregoing elements, a secondary valve or equivalent device which serves the purpose of admitting the steam or other fluid to and exhausting it from the chamber containing the said piston either directly or through the intervention ot` other mechanism.
lt is a further purpose of theimprovement to provide a secondary valve ot' a balanced character suoli that a minimum effort is required to operate it.
I will describe a valve-actuating device showing the features of myinvention, subsequently pointing out the novelty of the lat-ter in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view, mainly in elevation, of a valve-actuating device embodying my invent-ion, certain parts being removed the better to show parts lying beyond. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the device represented in Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a side elevation ot' the valve device in a modified form. This view shows an alternative form of construction for operating the secondary valve. Fig. 6 is a vertical section through Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation representing in detail the construction for operating the secondary valve represented in Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is an enlarged view of the balanced secondary valve shown in Fig. 7.

Coniining the description at first to the device exempliied in Figs. l, 2, 3, and ft, A represents a valve-casing provided with an inlet-opening a and an outlet-opening a', both of which openings maybe tapped, as usual, to receive the threaded ends of connecting-pipes. The main-valve head is represented at A', cooperating with a suitable seat c2 and rigidly connected by a stem B with a piston B', which is fitted to a cylinder ZJ, formed by a bonnet detachably connected with the valve-casing. The stem B is hollow, and to its .cylindrical bore there is tilted the tinted spindle b2 of the auxiliary valve O. rlhe seat of the auxiliary valve O is formed at the extremity o-f said bore on the main-valve head. The auxiliary valve moves two and fro in the tubular extension @,projecting from the face of the mainvalve head. rlhis extension is provided with transverse openings c', such that when the auxiliary valve is moved from its seat the steam or other iiuid may iind its way inward through the opening c and thence to the rear ofthe piston B by way ofthe iiutiugs or channels in the valve-spindle b2. The space at the front ot' the piston B is of course open to the atmosphere by suitable passages c2.
For the purpose of moving the auxiliary valve from its seat l have provided on the Spindle of the same the secondary piston D, which is fitted to slide to and fro in the cylinder d. In this instance as well one or more openings rl' will place the space at the front of the piston D in constant communication with the atmosphere.
For the purpose of limiting the distance the main-valve head A moves from its seat an adjustable stop E enters the valve-casing and is provided with a shoulder e, against which the end of the tubular extension c impinges when the main-valve head A is thrust from its seat by the movement of the piston B. If this stop is fitted at its inner extremity to the bore of the tubular extension 0,'it will serve additionally as a guide to the moving valve A' and connected parts.
The play of the auxiliary valve O may be limited by an adjustable stop E, here represented in the form of .a screw, provided with a check-nut and passing inward through the stop E.
Exhaust from the cylinder b takes place ICO when the secondary piston D is in the position shown in Fig. 2 through the tlutings or channels of the spindle b2 and the openings CZ'. The secondary piston D operates as a valve, since when it is moved to the opposite extremity of its stroke to that represented in Fig. 2 communication with the passage CZ is shut off. Openings e' are arranged in the stop E to prevent any undue compression during 'the backward movement of the auxiliary valve C.
The secondary valve for admitting and exhausting the motive fluid to and from the space at the rear of the piston D is shown more particularly in Figs. 3 and 4, where the valve-face is formed upon the extremity of the rod F, which passes outward through a suitable stuffing-box f on secondary-valve chest, which latter may consist of an extension of the bonnet forming cylinder b. Steam, duc., is admitted from the inlet-opening ct of the main valve by the by-pass f to the space at the rear of the valve-face on the rod F, and the space on the opposite side of the valveseat is in communication with the space at the rear of the piston D through the passage f2.
The rod F is connected with the cylindrical blockfs, Working through a stuffing-box f4, by a reduced stem f5. The edge of the block f3 acts as a sliding valve coperating with the exhaust-passage f6, leading from the space surrounding the reduced stem f5 to the atmosphere. Normallyorinthepositionshown in Fig. 3 the space at the rear of the piston B is in communication with the atmosphere via this passage f6, and the main-valve head A is kept upon its seat by the pressure of the live steam, dsc., aided by a spring G, which surrounds the rod g, extending from the piston D outwardly through the end of the cylinder CZ.

The stem H of the secondary valve may be operated either mechanically or electrically. If the former method of operation is desired, there is provided a pivoted lever 7i, serving for the to-and-fro movement of the stem. If it is desired to operate the valve electrically, one or more electromagnets I-I' are mounted adjacent to the stem in a suitable chamber and coperative with an armature h', secured to the stem. The electromagnets are controlled by a suitable circuit H2, which comprise a battery h2 and a suitable key 72.2. H2 is a retracting-spring surrounding the stem. Itis manifest from this construction of the secondary valve that the same is approximately balanced in all positions and there is no position in which there is an excessive preponderance of pressure. A minimum effort is therefore required to operate the valve.
A fulcrumed lever I may be arranged to cooperate with the auxiliary valve C to elfect its movement from its seat if it is desired to operate it mechanically without the use of the secondary valve. Referring to the construction set forth in the remaining figures', L represents a valve-casing provided with an inletopening Z and an outlet-opening Z. L is a main-valve head connected by a stem Z2 with a piston L2, fitted to a cylinder L3, formed on the valve-chest. M is an adjustable stop passing through the cylinder-head and against which the piston L2 impinges when the same is thrust backward to lift the valve L from its seat. The spindle Z3 passes outward through the Wall of the valve-casing and is surrounded by aspring Z4, impingiug against the casing or a fixture thereof, and the collar Z5, secured to the extremity of the spindle.
For the purpose of admitting or exhausting A steam or other fluid to and from the space at the rear of the piston L2, I have provided a secondary valve comprising a rod N, whose extremity forms a valve-face, a reduced stem n, and a cylindrical block or piston n', which cooperates with the exhaust-passage n2, as described with reference to the secondary valve already set forth. This secondary valve may be operated in the manner there disclosed, or', instead of projecting the rod or piston n' through the head of the cylinder in which it works, the cylinder may at this extremity be closed and the valve operated by means of a frame O, connecting the outer extremity of the rod N with an armature 0, which` moves to and fro along a rod 0V and coperates with the electromagnets O. y If desired, a lever may be used for operating the frame O, as described with reference to Fig. 3.

04 is a passage leading from the space at the rear of the piston L2 to the space surrounding the stem n. A by-pass 05 connects thevalveinlet Z with the space 726.
It will be seen in both forms of the device that there is a main-valve head whose movement to and from its seat is under the control of an actuating-piston, which in its turn is moved to and fro through the medium of a secondary valve, whose operation serves to control the admission and exhaust of steam or other Huid to and from the exposed face of the actuating-piston, and, furthermore, that the secondary valve is essentially balanced and not subjected either in its closed or open position to excess of pressure in either direction requiring an excessive effort to se- A cure its movement.
Having described my invention, what I consider as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a valve-actuating device the combination of a valve-casing, a valve-seat arranged therein, a main-valve head operating against the said seat, a piston suitably arloo Ito
ranged in the said casing, a hollo7 stein connecting the said main-valve head and piston, a uted spindle operating through the said stem, an auxiliary valve connected to one end of the said spindle, a secondary piston connected to the opposite end of the said spindle, and means adapted to pass a fluid pressure against the said secondary piston, for operating the same thereby operating the secondary valve and causing the operation of the main valve head, substantially as set forth.
2. In a valve-actuating device the combination of a valve-casing provided with suitable inlet and outlet ports, a valve-seat suitably arranged in the said casing, a mainvalve head operating against the said seat, a cylinder h suitably connected to the said valve-casing, a piston operating therein, a hollow valve-stein connecting the said mainvalve head and piston, a cylinder d connected to the cylinder Z2, a tinted spindle operating through the said hollow valve-stem and into the cylinder d, an auxiliary valve secured to one end of the said spindle, a secondary piston secured to the opposite end of the said spindle, and means adapted to pass a iiuidpressure against the said secondary piston, for operating the same thereby operating the secondary valve and causing the operation of the main-valve head, substantially as set forth.
3. In a valve-actuating device, the combination with a valve-casing, a valve-seat suitably arranged therein, a main-valve head normally in engagement with the said seat, a piston, a hollow stem connecting the said piston, an auxiliary valve, a valve-seat arranged on the one side of said main-valve head for the said auxiliary' valve, a secondary piston, a fluted spindle operating through the said stem and connecting the auxiliary valve and secondary piston, and means adapted to pass a duid-pressure against the said secondary piston for operating the same causing the auxiliary valve to move from its seat thereby operating the first-named piston and moving the main valve from its seat, substantially. as set forth.
4. In a valve-actuating device, the combination of a valve-casing provided With suitable inlet and outlet ports, a valve-seat arranged therein, a main-valve head adapted to be normally in engagement with the said seat, a cylinder b suitably connected to the said casing, a piston operating therein, a hollovv valve-stein connecting the said mainvalve head and said piston,an auxiliary valve, a valve-seat arranged on the one side of the said main-valve head for the said auxiliary valve, a tubular extension formed integral With the said main-valve head on one side thereof provided with inlet-openings, a cylinder d connected to the cylinder b, a secondary piston operating therein7 a flut-ed spindle operating through the said stein connecting the auxiliary valve and secondary piston, and means for operating the saine thereby operating the secondary valve causing the operation of the piston and moving the main valve from its seat, substantially as set forth.
5. In a valve-actuating device, the combination of a valve-casing provided With suitable inlet and outlet ports, a valve-seat arranged therein, a main-valve head adapted to be normally in engagement with the said seat, a cylinder B suitably connected to the said casing, a piston operating therein, a hollow valve-stem connecting the said main-valve head and said piston, an auxiliary valve, a valve-seat arranged in the one side of the said main-valve head for the said auxiliary valve, a tubular extension formed integral Wit-h the said main-valve head on one side thereof provided with inlet-openings, a cylinder d connected to the cylinder l), a secondary piston operating therein, a iiuted spindle operating through the said stem connecting the auxiliary valve and secondary piston, an extension formed integral with the said cylinder b, the said extension provided with an inlet-port registering With the inlet-port of the valvecasing, said extension also provided With an outlet-port, connections between the said outlet-port and cylinder b, and a secondary valve arranged in the said extension adapted when operated to allow of pressure to enter the cylinder d and operate the secondary piston, substantially as set forth.

In a valve-actuating device, the combination of a valve-casing provided with suitable inlet and outlet ports, a valve-seat arranged therein, a inain-valve head adapted to be normally in engagement with the said seat, a cylinder Z2 suitably connected to the said casing, a piston operating therein, a hollow valve-stein connecting the said main-valve head and piston, an auxiliary valve, a valveseat arranged in the one side of the said mainvalve head for the said auxiliary valve, a tubular extension formed integral With the said main-valve head on one side thereof provided With inlet-openings, a cylinder d connected to the cylinder l), a secondary piston operating therein, a iluted spindle operatingthrongh the said stem connecting the auxiliary valve and secondary pistou, an extension formed integral With the said cylinder b, the said extension provided with an inlet-port registering With the inlet-port of the valvecasing, said extension also provided with an outletport, connections between the said outlet-port and cyilnder b, a secondary valve arranged in the said extension, and electrical means suitably connected thereto for operating the same to allow of pressure to enter the cylinder d and operate the secondary piston, substantially as set forth.
7. In a valve-actuating device, the combination of a valve-casing provided with suitable inlet and outlet ports, a valve-seat arranged therein, a main-valve h ead adapted to be normally in engagement with the said seat,

a cylinder b suitably connected to the said casing, a piston operating therein, a hollow valve-stem connecting the said main-valve head and said piston, an auxiliary valve, a valve-seat arranged in the one side of the said main-valve head for the said auxiliary valve, a tubular extension formed integral with the said main-valve head on one side thereof provided with inlet-openings, a cylinder d connected to the cylinder Z), a secondary piston operating therein, a fiuted spindle operating through the said stem connecting the auxiliary valve and secondary piston, an extension formed integral with the said cylinder b, the said extension provided with an inlet-port registering with the inlet-port of the valve-casing, said extension also provided with an outlet-port, connections between the said outlet-port and cylinder h, a rod g connected to one side of the said secondary piston and extending into the atmosphere, a resistance-spring mounted on the said rod, a cap connected to the outer end of the said rod, and means connected to the cylinder d for operating the said rod thereby operating the said secondary piston, substantially as set forth.

In a valve-actuating device, the combination of a valve-casing provided with suitable inlet and outlet ports, a valve-seat arranged therein, a main-valve head adapted to be normally in engagement with the said seat, a cylinder ZJ suitably connected to the said casing, a piston operating therein, a hollow valvestem connecting the said main-valve head and said piston, an auxiliary valve, a valve-seat arrangedinthe one side of the said main-valve head for the said auxiliary valve, a tubular extension formed integral with the said mainvalve head on one side thereof provided with inlet-openings, a cylinder d connected to the cylinder b, a secondary piston operating therein, a iiuted spindle operating through the said stem connecting the auxiliary valve and secondary piston, an extension formed integral with the said cylinder b, the said extension provided with an inlet-port registering with the inlet-port of the valve-casing, said extension also provided with an outletport, connections between the said outlet-port and cylinder Y), a rod g connected to one side of the said secondary piston and extending into the atmosphere, a resistance spring mounted on the said rod, a cap connected to the outer end of the said rod, means connected to the cylinder d for operating the said rod thereby operating the said secondary piston,
and means arranged in the said cylinder CZ for exhausting the back pressure from the piston, substantially as set forth.

In a valve-actuating device, the combination of a valve-casing provided with suitable inlet and outlet ports, a valve-seat arranged therein, a main-valve head Aadapted. to be normally in engagement With the said seat, a cylinder Z) suitably connected to the said casing, a piston operatin g therein, a hollow valvestem connecting the said main-valve head and said piston, an auxiliary valve, a valve-seat arranged in the one side of the said main-valve head for the said auxiliary valve, a tubular extension formed iritegral with the said mainvalve head on one side thereof provided with inlet-openings, a cylinder' (Z connected to the cylinder Z), a secondary piston operating therein, a iiuted spindle operating through the said stem connecting the auxiliary valve and secondary piston, an extension formed integral with the said cylinder b, the said extension provided with an inlet-port registering with the inlet-port of the valve-casing, said extension also provided With an outletport, connections between the said outlet-port and cylinder b, a rod g connected to one side of the said secondary piston and extending into the atmosphere, a lresistance spring mounted on the said rod, a cap connected to the outer end of the said rod, means connected to the cylinder d for operating the said rod thereby operating the said secondary piston, means arranged in the said cylinder CZ for exhausting the back pressure from the piston, and an adjustable stop for the auxiliary and main valve head arranged in the said casing, substantially as set forth.

The combination of a main valve, a piston whose movement controls the movement of the main valve, a hollow valve-stem connecting the main valve with the piston, an auxiliary valve for controlling the flow of fluid to the piston, a secondary piston, and means for controlling the iiuid for operating said secondary piston causing thereby the operation of the auxiliary and main valves, substantially as set forth.
