FENCE WIRE STRETCHEB.
(Application filed Apr. 19, 1899.)
(No Model TN: News rsrzas w, FNOTO-LITHO., msumaiom q, 4:.
UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE,
ALPHA D. MARKILLIE, OF BASCO, ILLINOIS.
FENCE-WIRE STRETCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,268, dated September 19, 1899.
Application filed April 19, 1899.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALPHA D. MARKILLIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Basco, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Wire Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
My invention relates to fence-wire stretchers; and the object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable, and effective device for conveniently and expeditiously stretching fence-wires.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will with the fixed fence-post A.
be hereinafter more fully described, and par-- ticularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention. 7
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fence-wire stretcher, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line of the center of the sprocket-wheel. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the stretcher-bracket.
A denotes the fence-post, and 1 an auxiliary post, on which the stretcheriis mounted. This post 1 is pointed at its lower end to be temporarily inserted in the ground to support it in an upright position beyond and parallel 2 and 3 denote horizontal parallel arms which encompass the post 1, and their shouldered pointed ends are set against the fencepost to take up the strain while the fence-wire is being drawn taut. The socket on the arm 3 is provided with a set-screw 4 to secure it in place. A collar 5, provided with a setscrew 6, encompasses the post 1 to adjustably secure the stretcher-bracket 7 in place, and a sleeve 8 encompasses the post 1 and rests on the bracket 7 to support the arm 2. A transverse shaft 9 is journaled in the parallel arms of the bracket, and it carries a sprocket-wheel 10 and ratchet-wheel 11, while on its outer smart. 713,584. (No model.)
end is loosely mounted a hand-lever 12, carrying a pivoted pawl 13, adapted to engage the teeth on the ratchet-wheel, and 14 de= notes a gravity-pawl fulcrumed on the bracket 7 and also engaging the ratchet-wheel. v
15 denotes a curved guard formed integral with the bracket and extending part way over the sprocket-wheel, as shown.
' 16 denotes the sprocket-chain, the free end of which passes over the sprocket-wheel and under the guard, and the opposite end ofthe chain carries a bar 17, formed with a serrated jaw 18, and 19 denotes a coacting jaw formed on the handle 20, pivoted on the bar 17.
The fence-wire is clamped between the jaws 18 19, and by means of the hand-lever 12 the sprocket-chain is drawn in by the sprocketwheel, and when the proper tension has been attained on the fence-wire the latter is secured to the fence-post by staples in the usual manner.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The machine for stretching fence-Wire, consisting of the cylindrical post, 1, the arms, 2 and 3,detachably secured thereto, the bracket, 7, adjustably secured to the said post, the sprocket-wheel, 10, mounted in said bracket, the curved guard, 15, projecting over the sprocket-wheel, the sprocket-chain and its vise, the collar, 5, and the sleeve, 8, interposed between the bracket and arm, 2, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
