BLANK-BOOK.
SPECFICATON forming* part. of Letters Patent NO. 632,941, dated Septelnber 12, 1899.

.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. HERTLEQ a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi-g cago, in the county of Cook and State of llili-2 nois, have invented a certain new and nseful. Improvementin Prescription-Blank Books orl Binding-Cases, (Case No. 1,) of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, concise, and exact dei sheets and blot the several prescriptions as scription.
items will be forgotten.
I may brieiiy describe the book or case of my invention as consisting of two stiened covers, to one of which the leaves or prescription-blanks are removably blocked or secured along two of their outer edges, the other cover being adapted to fold down over said leaves and protect the same when the case is not in use. The cover last named preferably is provided with memorandum-leaves perma- 'nently bound thereon and may also conveniently have a sheet of blotting-paper attached which is adapted to face the removably-bound leaves 0r prescription-blanks. are secured together by a middle section, which serves to protect the loose or unbound edges of the blanks.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, illustrating in perspective a prescription-blank book or binding-case made in accordance with my invention.
The covers a h are stiened and may be made of leather, cloth, or paper, as desired. The central portion or back c, interposed between the covers, is flexible. Any desired or convenient number of prescription blanks or leaves d are secured along the left-hand and outer edges to the cover h by means of bindcrs glue, the glued edges being covered by a cloth or paper facing-strip to protect the The coversv same. Upon the cover a are preferably bound a few memorandum-leaves e, which are suitably ruled to receive entries. I have shown attached thereto two sheets' ruled, respectively, for a physicians visiting-list fand the corresponding cash-account g. It desired, the first sheet may be of blotting-paper, Which will serve both to cover the memorandumwritten.
The utility of the device will at once be apparent, since it is seen that the visiting-list may be kept in an orderly manner upon sheet f, while the second or account sheet g will serve as a reminder whenever the prescriptions are written to make corresponding entries thereon. An inspection of the drawing shows that the prescription-blanks d are amply protected upon three of the edges, respectively, by the flexible section of the cover c and the facing-strip CZ', secured to the binders glue, and, moreover, the loose upper righthand corners and ends of the blanks are protected by cover a when the book is closed. On the other hand the said blanks are mounted in a manner most convenient for detachment, since when the cover is open the upper right-hand corners are free and may be successively grasped for the purpose of tearing the uppermost blank from the block or pad. Then the book is closed, on the contrary, the unattached rear edges of the blanks are practically as secure against displacement as they would be were the same fastened by binders glue or otherwise bound together, while the left-hand end d2, which is preferably placed downward in the pocket, is sufficiently durable to withstand the ordinary amount of wear to which the book may be subjected, the same, together with the outer edges of the blanks, being provided with a durable facingstrip. W'hen all the prescription-blanks have been used, the case or binding may be tiled away for reference and, if desired, the entries upon sheets f and g may be transferred to a separate account or ledger. There prescription-blanks are furnished by druggists, as is commonly the case, the advantage of a binding-case capable of retaining the blanks in good condition until all are used will beat once appreciated, since it is not an uncommon experience that the prescriptions as ordinarily bound become soiled and mutilated from being carried in the pocket with various other articles, and in consequence are thrown away. Furthermore, the advantage of having a memorandum and account associated with the prescription-blanks will commend itself at once to the user, since the entries may be most convenientlyinserted at the time the visits are made to the various patients,
'and the writing of a prescription serves to remind the physician to enter his visit and charge. My improved binding, moreover, commends itself to the manufacturer, inasmuch asin addition tothe conveniences which it affords it is inexpensive and requires no special machinery for the manufact-ure of said binding-cases.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by these Letters Patent, is-
1. A binding for removable leaves or sheets of paper, consisting of two stiffened covers connected by a flexible section, and a plurality of leaves removably attached to one of the said covers along one of the ends and the outside edges of said leaves, the second cover being mounted to fold over the unprotected edges and ends of the leaves and engage the exible portion of the cover with the inner edges thereof, whereby the leaves are removably secured in position upon the first-mentioned cover and are protected until used,
substantially as described.
The herein-described binding for prescription-blanks, consisting of two stiffened covers provided with a flexible central portion or section, and a plurality of blanks removably secured to one of said covers along one of the ends and the outer edges of said blanks, the second cover being adapted to fold over the unprotected edges and ends of the blanks, whereby the same are protected nut-il used.
3. The herein-described binding for prescription-blanks, consisting of two stiifened covers provided with a flexible central portion or section, and a plurality of blanks removably secured to one ofsaid covers along one of the ends and the outer edges of said blanks, the said ends and edges thereof being protected by a facing-strip, the second cover being adapted to fold over the unprotected edges and ends of the blanks, whereby the same are protected until used.
et. In a prescription-blank book, the combination With the stiiened covers a b having a central flexible portion c, of a plurality of blanks CZ glued along their left-hand ends and outer edges to the cover b, the said ends and edges being provided with a protecting or facing strip d', thereby leaving the inner edges and right-hand ends of said blanks free to facilitate their removal, the said cover a and section c being adapted normally to fold over and protect the blanks, substantially as described.
5. In a prescription-blank book, the combination with the stiffened covers ct l) having a central exible portion c, of a plurality of blanks d glued along their left-hand ends and outer edges to the cover Y), the said ends and edges being provided wit-h a protecting or facing strip CZ', thereby leaving the inner edges and right-hand ends of said blanks free to facilitate their removal, the said cover (t and section c being adapted normally to fold over and protect the blanks, and memorandnm-sheetsf g attached to the cover d, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 28th day of December, A. D. 1898.
