RAlLYVAY CAR OR TRAIN VENTILATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,469, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed May 27,1898. Serial 110,681,950. (No model.)
To (all whom it may cancer/t.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH MOCREERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Car or Train Ventilation; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the construction of a freight-car so that the car may be attached to a ventilating apparatus, whereby the contents of the car may be kept in proper condition in transit.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a freight-car with parts broken away, so as to show the interior construction partly in section. Fig. 2 represents a top view with parts broken away and part in section. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail in vertical section, showing the method of closing the ports in the side of the ventilating-tube. Fig. 4 represents a similar horizontal section. Figs. 5 and 6 represent a front and vertical section of the ventilat0ropenings and the device for operating them.
The drawings show a freight-car A,provided "with a ventilating-tube a, arranged longitudinally along the middle of the bottom of the car and extending from end to end. This tube at its ends extends upwardly and outwardly and is provided on the outside with a flexible coupling 13 for attachment to the next car. At each end also the tube has a valve or door a, which may be shut at the rear end when the car is the last one on the train. At stated distances the tube a is provided in its sides with holes or ports 0. Extending longitudinally within the, tube a is a rod O, provided with gates or shutters 0', adapted to cover the ports 0. The rod 0 is provided with a rack 0 with which there engages a pinion (1, attached to a rod D, which extends to the outside of the car and is adapted at its outer end to a key. At intervals along the length of the car there are short transverse tubes E, communicating with and loading from the tube CL and provided with At intervals along its sides the car A is provided with a number of ventilator-openings F at the top and G at the bottom. The open= ings F are in the outside boarding of the car, and opposite to these openings F are openings F in the inner sheathing of the car. Between the outer boarding and the inner sheathing of the car there is a passage-way downwardly from the opening F, and at the bottom of the car there is the ventilator-opening G. At the top of the car and adapted to the opening F is a shutter F Connected to this shutter is a rod f, which passes downwardly between the boarding and sheathing of the car and is jointed atf to a connecting-rod f The latter is pivoted at f to a sector-leverfi secured to and pivoted upon the pintle f and also having a shoulder f Below the sector-lever f is a detent f having the headf". The sector-lever and detent are pivoted in a plate g, secured to an opening in the boarding of the car.
At an opening in the side of the car in a convenient position a thermometer H is placed, its surface in contact with the interior atmosphere of the car and provided with a glass covering for visual inspection.
A freight-car constructed as described is to be connected up to a source of heat, the coupling 13 being connected to the coupling of the apparatus furnishing the hot air. The valves C6 are opened and hot air passes down through the tube CL and through the transverse tubes 6 to the interior of the car. Also by manipulating the rod C the ports 0 are opened, the hot air passing from the tube a through these ports into the interior of the car.
By manipulating the sector-lever f the shutters F are raised or lowered, opening or closing the openings F. When hot air is forced into the car, the shutters F are raised so as to close the openings F, and then the hot air which passes from the tube ct into the interior of the car passes through the openings F, down between the sheathing and boardin g of the car, and out through the lower ventilator-openings G; but in summer when cool air is forced into the tube aand out into the interior of the car the shutters F are lowered, uncovering the openings F, and the cool air, which has become more or less warm in passing through the contents of the car, emerges through openings F and F at the top of the car instead of being compelled to pass down the side of the car. Also by the device described whatever gases may be generated in the contents of the car are thoroughly carried 0% either through the openings F or G, as the case may be.
Having described my invention, What I claim is 1. The combination of the air tube, a, provided with the ports, 0, the rod, 0, having the gates, c, for closing such ports, the rack, 0 and the pinion, (Z, and its shaft, D, for operating such rod, as set forth.
2. A car provided with an opening at the bottom, two registering outer and inner openings at the top, a passage leading from the bottom opening to those in the top and a Valve for opening and closing the outer of the two top openings whereby the inner top opening may be made to communicate with the outer air either through the bottom opening or through the outer top opening as set forth.
3. A car provided at its top with' a ventilator-opening in its outside boarding, an opening in its sheathing, registering with such ventilator-opening, a Ventilator-opening at the bottom, and a passage between the boarding and sheathingrof the car connecting the opening in the sheathing with the ventilator= opening at the bottom, and a valve adapted to the ventilator-opening at the top whereby such opening may be closed and the car ven til-ated through the bottom opening, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
