TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. DOTY, of -thecity, county, and State of New Yorlr, here invented av new and improved lothes-Pin; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eractdescription thereof, which will en eble others skilled in the art to marke and use the same, referencebeinghad tothe aecompanying drawings, forming part of this specification y f The 'object of this invention vis to .make a curable and self-adjusting clothes-pin or fastener'iu the simplest and least costly menneiyend to construct it so as to be strong and-.easily applied toorremovedi'ro ""ii`ne, as i may be desired, and not to be liable to cause freezing of fabrics to the line by holdngdempnesfs.
Theinvention consistsin the use of wire for the aforesaid purpose, the Wire being-so bentfasto possess not only the necessary spring, but also the clamping surfaces. I prefer to make this clothes-pin of onesingle piece of wire; but, if desired, it maybe made of two yor more4 pieces with the same effectif.' I njftlie 'eec'qmpanying drawing my invention is illustrated 'if' I Figure 1 being a side vien'- of my improvedclothes-pin.
Figure Zis an edge View of the seme. Figure 3 is a side view of the saine, showing it applied to a line. l i Similar letters of reference i-ndicatelike paiitsv v l t The clothes-pin 'A consists of' tti-vo arms, a and b, and the loop c. It is made of elastic wire.` The loop c is formed by bending the"wilfe`ispirallyaround a centre, but may., when using strong wire, be dispensed with, as a. simple half-,circular bond or-connecti'on for the arms may have spring enough for all practice; o ses. The
} arms a and cross each other-'near their lower ends, and are prevented f rom being bent out by s-piece, la', formed on the arin b, by turning the end of tlxe wire on the lowerend-o' b toone side, and tliejn4 li Y dingit up again parallel with' the main portion of the arm, to whieh'it'is finally secured at The arm is passed Vthrough the opening thus formed, and rests against the cross-piece b. Each arm is provided nearfnits centre with a deviation or bend, d, towards the outside,- which, when the lower'ends of the er'ms are pulled ziprt inthe direction of the arrows in iig. 1,.i`orms two sides of a quadrangle, theothe'r two being forni'ed by the'upper parte of the arms a and b, as shown in fig. 3. Within this quadrangle theline is enclosed, as sh'ownfin tig'. 3, vand the clothes arc securely held. This clothes-pin is applied by simply pressing iti upon the line, whereby the arms j will be spread apart until the lower corners of d have passed by the line. yJ .he spring will then'throvv -the arrns together an-dpress them against the line. The pin is removed fromv the line' by simply pulling it upward. VIf desired, the arm a may-also be made double like the arm b, whereby the piu will be held still more steady the line. i 'i I Y Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, end desireto secure by Letters Patent-f A' The wire clothes-.pin A, having the arm doubled and secured thereto as at b, forming a'loop, the arm a i passing through said loop and resting u-pon cross-piece b', whereby any lateral movement is preventethes herein set forth. WM. 'M DOTY.
